Smog Pump/Exhaust Question (Not a Smog Delete thread)
I had my exhaust done front to back last summer by a local garage that specializes in stainless steel exhaust systems. Around Christmas time my catalytic converter failed to the point that the engine would not start. We checked everything in the engine - tore it apart and rebuilt it - it wasn't running rich, wasn't throwing codes, nothing!
Since then, I've been driving without a cat. I noticed the other day that the tube coming from the air pump was welded into the exhaust AFTER the location of the cat. My understanding was that the tube from the air pump needed to be placed BEFORE the cat to provide oxygen and heat to help the cat burn hydrocarbons correctly.
Am I wrong to assume that the incorrect re-installation of the tube from the air pump caused the cat to fail? I've heard of exhaust places hooking things like this back up wrong or not at all, just doing a quick job. Am I way off base here?
