1987 F250 460 Question

A friends friend offerd to sell me his 87 F250 460 for $800. The trucks a strong runner and is in pretty good shape. The only bad thing is that he says it uses oil and smokes out of the exhaust a bit. Ive been wanting to build a hotrodder/mud truck for a while, does anyone know if your able to build big power out of the late 80's 460's fairly easily. It's spose to have around 230hp and 300tq now, id like to to get 450hp out of it if easily possible. I know the early 70's lincoln 460s made 360 with higher compression. My question would it just be smarter to hold off and wait til i find the early 460, or would switchin out the heads, intake, cam, etc on the later 460s make big power?
