I have a 2001 f-150 the brakes are sticking and I get a bad shake which seems to come from the front and rear of the vechile. It doesn't do it all the time but when it does it slowly gets worse. I have replaced 3 of the 4 calipers and will be replacing the forth, but not much is changing. Any advice/comment would be great.

 

well i have a 1999 and it done this it would shack on godly and pull so i had the rotors turned all of them and it still done it so i put new brakes on it all the way around still done it and i even put 2 new spindles and calipers on it and still did it.. well come to find out when i took the wheel bearings off i noticed on the left front wheel bearing that it had a defect on one of the races in the bearing and when id turn to the left it would howl and shake so i put new Tempkins ( the best) and it solved all the problems..... hope this helps if u have any ?'s let me know.

now for the sticking brakes check the slides that the brakes sit on they could be a bur on them i had a problem on a jeep i worked on they would get stuck and get really really hot and so i sanded the slides down and it worked ever since

 

The vibration in the brakes can possibly be contributed to warped rotors. Have you checked those? Also, it is the job of the master cylinder to provide proportionate braking pressure to the brakes as needed (ie: the pressure you apply, and the fact that the front brakes receive much more pressure than the rear). So the valves in the master cylinder may be going bad. You should look into that before they dont work at all! Its pretty scary when you loose all braking pressure. I dont really see a need to replace the calipers. Are they leaking? Do the pistons look crooked? I assume that with the calipers you replaced the pads as well. Brakes have made a fool of me many times before. I hope you have better luck.

 

Here is an experience I just had.
Brake pulsing. The faster the speed the worse the brake-down shake.
I knew the right rear pads were worn at an angle so did the service there first.
I was blaming the caliper for being stuck as either the piston or the slides.
The piston was free and the slides were free but noticed one slide was a bit lazy sliding by hand.
Inspected under the rubber boots and found it clean as new no rust or any other situation.
Lubed under the boot just on that slide.
Put the new linings in and reassembled.
Went out for the evening and so far not feeling any brake shake and seems to have a bit better braking.
Need to put more time on the new pads before seeing if the shake was due to the condition found then install new pads on the other side to match.
Seems to show just how sensitive the system can be at times.

 

BD, you know this is a brake problem ? It does it while the pedal is applied, or when letting up ? Not when coasting down the road ?

I've seen alot of later model fords with collapsed brake hoses. Usually fairly cheap to replace. When you think they are sticking, feel the hubs to see if one is hot. If so there is the place to look.

 

....an often overlooked issue that will cause this condition also, would be the parking brake hanging up inside the rear rotors. Do yourself a favor and remove the adjusters and parking brake shoes and then drive it around and see how that does for it. Lots of guys on here have removed there parking brake shoes for good!

I have a 1995 Ford F-150. Similar problem. My brakes would stick and get hot and eventually lock up to the point I couldn't move. I replaced calipers,pads, flushed fluid, bled the brakes, etc. The most important thing you can possibly do beside making sure the slides and such are greased but replace the rubber caliber lines that lead to the metal brake line. Best thing to replace and solved my whole brake issue. As far as Shake goes. Might be warped rotors. Good luck.
