56 steering column, how long?

Hi all,
Looking to see what length you guys use in your 56 trucks. I have a mII steering rack. Which aftermarket columns are you guys using and which length? I will be looking for a tilt column without shifter or ignition. Are any of you using a salvage yard column that needed no modifications? if so what'd you get it out of? Getting close to starting it up and really need some information about the column. Thanks for your time,
James

I'm using a 30" column with a Toyota P/S conversion, should be allright for the MII. too long and your angles will be too tight.

Thanks,
I guess the more drop I put on the column the straighter the angle between the column and rack and pinion.
Guess I need to put my seat in and use a broom stick or something to get a better idea of where my wheel needs to be. I'm 5'10, was hoping to get some feedback with salvage yard models or specific aftermarket columns. Anyone with a homemade column drop?

The advice I received and went with was 33". A 30" column would have resulted in interference with my headers. I have a 53 with a 302 SBF in it. What motor are you running?

I have a 460 with sanderson block hugger headers and a MII suspension. Do you have any pics of your column mounted? What about pics of the drop and the shaft in the engine bay? Thanks

I agree, but if mine was any shorter, I wouldn't have cleared my headers. OTOH, I'm running factory dimensioned shorty headers and not block-huggers YMMV.

Mine pretty much looks like these pictures, but I have a 4.5 inch drop. Maybe my seats are lower? If you don't get enough of a drop, then your column has the same angle as a UPS delivery van. You can see in the top picture, if the column was shorter, the steering mechanism would hit the headers. The extra length allows it to clear the headers.

hey guys,
For now I am going to use an old firebird column. A friend gave it to me and it measures 35". I had to eliminate the rods for the dimmer switch and ignition to make it fit the 4.5" column drop; but I'm not using those anyway. I have no idea what year it's from, but it looks old, 80's or early 90's I would guess. I will end up buying an aftermarket column when I'm finished, they look a lot cleaner.
Thanks for the information; btw, it looks like a 35" will be a good length for clearance and drop angle.
James
