Help diagnose my ignition/starter problem

As you can see in the video when I go to start my truck it goes clank, clank, clank a few times then starts. However if I just turn the key switch on and go under the hood I can run a jumper wire from the battery to the starter relay and it cranks right up with no clanks! Batteries are new. Has to be a problem with the ignition switch right?

either a bad cable connection, bad starter relay, or a bad starter.
i would start with the ground connections at the block. make sure they are nice and shiny clean.

Thanks I will do that. But if it was the starter wouldn't it have the same problem when I run a jumper wire from the battery to the starter relay?

From the sound it makes I would have to agree with what tjc says. But that doesn`t explain why it starts when jumping to the relay. I assume you are jumping from batt. pos. to the light gauge terminal on the relay?
Maybe try starting it with the key but with the shifter in neutral instead of Park.

What happens if you short the two large posts on the starter solenoid on the fender wall with a screw driver? If it starts fine like that a few times, it may be the ignition switch sending a bad signal to the relay.

If it acts up when you do this, then it is probably like what TJC said: ground, solenoid or starter. There is a solenoid on the starter, too.

If I jump the two posts that I'm point to in the pic with a screwdriver it immediately cranks over and fires right up. Also if I run a jumper wire from the positive post on the battery to the post that my index finger is point to it fires right up too. Another thing with my key switch is that it does not always engage my glowplug relay. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't. The keyswitch doesn't feel real healthy, kinda loose.

Sounds like your ignition switch or linkage there in is your problem. Sometimes my ignition switch doesn't engage the first try and I have to let off and try again. I know I need to fix it but I need to get the truck running right first.

The sound you are hearing is most likely the ignition switch opening and closing the circuit and that will cause the starter to make a clunk sound.

I was thinking that it had to be the ignition switch or the connection between it and the relay but I just wanted to be sure. I probably should replace my switch but I'm thinking about installing a push button starter and hooking my glowplug relay up to a manual switch. I have it in my head that doing that will be better anyway since I'm getting ready to do the ZF5 swap.
