Chattering noise on Startup

Hey All,

Does anyone get a chattering noise for the first 2/3 seconds on a cold startup? My old 98 Navi did this and now my 07 does as well. It only happens if the truck sits for at least 3-4 hours OR the first startup after an oil change (does it longer the first time) and and goes away after a few seconds.

It seems to be worse in the cold/winter but not sure what it could be.

I had a tapping that just never went away at 10K miles, ended up replacing one of the heads. THen at 50K or so I got a marble sounding rattle on start up. It ended up being the timing chain tensioner gaskets and tensioner arms worn out. After they replaced that its fine.

Thanks Berry! You described it best, it is a marble sounding rattle.

I'm assuming the timing chain is inside the motor and going to be a PITA to get to

I took it into the dealer last year and they said not to worry as it may make that noise when cold. I didn't bother pushing since it only happened if the truck sat overnight.

now it's happening if the truck sits for even 30 mins and when it's warm aswell.

Here is a vid of the noise. Just want to see if this is the noise you were getting and in case you think it could be something else.

Timing chain tensioner gaskets and tensioner arms worn out for sure. That's the exact sound I had. Needs to be fixed. It's not normal at all.

Thanks Berry! I will take it back this weekend.

any ballpark on how much something like this would cost? or the amount of work involved?

just trying to avoid being blindsided by the dealer claiming i have to replace 10 other things to get to that part.

Your input is much appreciated

They need to remove valve rocker arm covers, front timing chain cover and the parts are about $250. Not sure what labor will be as mine was under warranty. I would guess your looking at $500+. Get a price before the work is begun. They know what it will cost.

Awww shoot. Mine just recently developed this noise. It doesn't last as long as yours, but it's definitely there. I am very interested in how your repair goes.

It's not the oil or filter.

One Dealership said they are "110% confident" it's the Cam Phaser.

Seen a few referenced to it from F150 guys BUT the noise they describe doesn't quite match.

Going to take it to the dealership near my office and see what they say as well.
