to the OP about filling in the underside, how about foam? If you're trying to build up large gaps/uneven areas and keep it lightweight, this might work for you.
I've seen a lot of 'tuner' shops and a shop reshaped a new Corvette by gluing down and cutting to shape blocks of foam. I've even seen online of folks using the hardware store spray foam while fiberglassing. Cut the foam roughly to shape, and lay a layer of fiberglass over the foam shape.
