carb id question: only slightly off topic

a friend of mine has a 53 merc, 255CID, automatic transmission. he wants to make sure he has the right carb on it. he has a holley EAC 9510, but he has heard that there were M, E, J versions of the 9510. can any one tell us what carb is OEM for a 53 merc, 255 CID with automatic transmission. also, where should he be pulling vacuum for the vac advance? he said they are not getting much vacuum. any help appreciated. dick r.

The Old Car Manual Project may have that info, or the IMOA (Int'l Merc Owners' Assoc.). (Edit: yes, here it is: http://www.oldcarmanualproject.com/m...901195215.html ) Model 1901-FF is correct for a 53 Merc, beyond that no detail.

As far as the vacuum, AFAIK the Merc flatheads used the same pathetic LoadAMatic that the Fords did. The link shows where it connects to the back of the carb. At idle, or even rev'ing with no load, you won't see much vacuum.

ross, you got to it before i had a chance. thanks. it seems to be a 1901 FF EAC-L. i'll send the links to my friend. looks like the one he has on it is not close to the original. you've been a great resource for fte and me in particular. dick r.

The "teapot" carbs aren't much loved, I'm not surprised someone replaced it. A Rochester 2GC is a common replacement and a big improvement, flows more too. Could be that's what is on his?

I Think I have one of those funky Carbs off a Merc ? (like the one in the link above)
I'll get a picture of it in the morning. I'm guessing it came off the 53 Merc as the 49-50 Merc had the teapot carb on it.

Is he looking for that specific one??

j madsen, i only see this guy from time to time. his merc looks original outside / in but he does have a hot rod air filter, spin on oil filter, ect. i don't think he's looking for totally original. his brother got him the carb on it now, said it was original, apparently not. when i see him, i'll see what he is looking for. thanks for the heads up. dick r.

darn it, I'm at work and forgot to get a picture!

It looks kinda like that one in link, (need to look at it again, take pictures )

I honestly don't know what it came on originally, I purchased 3 merc cranks, bare machined 8BA style block, 59 complete engine, and numerous misc parts, set of 8CM heads, set of EAC heads, and I think EAB heads, etc etc last month and the carb was included with the pile so I just assumed it may have been on one of the Mercs ?

The 49-51 Mercs had the backdraft style carburetor and the 52-53 had the open top teapot. Both are weird carburetors but can work well if properly rebuilt. I have rebuilt one of each and they both worked fine after rebuilding.

Yep, it looks just like the one in the link above and has EAC 9510 etc stamped on it. so sounds like what he's already got.
Come to think of it I don't think I've seen what the air cleaners cover is supposed to look like for this??

here it is.
