Steering Jerk...Box or Joints

Hey all been having problems with my steering wheel jerking at times on my 01 excursion. It will do it at times and then it is perfect. It did it real bad today, to the point it was hard to keep on the road (jerked left) parked it then came back out and drove it and it was fine. I also noticed the hub had moved half way to lock (superwinch lockers)

There is no play in the steering wheel from left to right and the front suspension seems tight. Do you think this is a sign of a ball joint or a failing steering box.

Thanks

Hi Brian,

As much as ball joints catch so much hell on our Excursions, this doesn't sound like a ball joint issue. If it were, I'd expect other symptoms -- pull, noise, tire wear, etc.

Maybe it is time to upgrade to a Redhead steering box.

Not a steering box issue. It's either the hub assembly bearings or the axle u-joints.

Do you think it could need new hubs.......There is no tire ware or pulling. Could it be the axel u joints when it does it in 2wd? but it did pull the tab you turn half way to lock when it happened today.

Thanks

In my case, it did a left to right jerking motion. When I locked the hubs, it didn't do it anymore. I had to replaced the hub assembly. The bearing was toasted. The locking hub was also toast. We noticed when doing these that the axle u-joint was binding as well so we replaced that too.

This coming weekend, I'm doing the other side plus ball joints.

How hard is it to change out a set of hubs? Mine already has the superwinch hubs installed. When I locked them in and drove it, the problem didn't become worse but it did feel " not very good"

Thanks
Brian

To me it sounds like your locking hubs. If one partially turned on you, something isn't right.

It sounds to me like binding u-joints, search for my fix to free them up in here before you go any further (easy fix).

EXv10.......So what was your fix. I did a search but only found where you may have thought or it was a power steering pump? What would be a good starting point.

Thanks

Can you send me a link to it. Our problem sounds exactly the same and I don't want to waste money throwing parts at it.

Thanks again!!!!
