Fly wheel removal and correct replacement
I am replacing my fly wheel and ring gear on my 76 F250 4x4 manual transmission. I have never done it and have been told it is not to bad to do. My biggest question is: Who makes the most correct replacement and is my flywheel the 184 tooth model. I have been told to only get the NAPA or Jeff's Bronco Graveyard fly wheel. I guess I should worry more on how to remove the old one first. In case everyone is wondering, I am replacing the this because my old and original ring gear is missing a few teeth and I hate having to put the truck in neutral and then manually hand crank my fan to reposition the ring gear to where there are teeth in order to start the truck.

You have an FE correct? if so, yes 184 tooth count is what you want, as for removal i just place the flywheel on a 5 gallon bucket (so the ring gear falls to the ground) heat up the ring gear evenly, keeping heat concentrated on the ring gear and it will eventually just fall off, use a little persuasion with a hammer if need be.....you can use the same method for installation or if you prefer, heat up the ring gear in the oven for about an hour while the flywheel chills in the freezer then pop it on.

Just set the flywheel on a bucket and heat the ring gear up with a torch and it falls right off!! Heat the new ring gear near red hot and use two pliers to lower it on the flywheel. make sure the ring gear is facing the right way!! Beveled edge towards the starter and make sure it goes back on the flywheel in the same spot. To get by for a while I have been known to just heat the ring gear up while still in the truck and rotate it 90 degrees buys you extra time as the starter has a new area to grab from.

Within 12 months after it was first obsoleted...if you type the part number into a dealers online website (like FTE sponsor partsguyed.com), the MSRP & discount prices come up, but below it sez:
This item is discontinued / After the 12 months have expired, the websites will say: No parts found.
C5AZ-6384-A .. Flywheel Ring Gear-184T / Applications: 1965/76 FE engines; 1965/74 240 I-6 & 1965/96 300 I-6, both w/184T ring gears / Obsolete / Last MSRP: $93.02 / Dealer net cost: $55.81.

78 Peb, thank you for that bit of advice, I have heard of people heating them up cherry red and destroying the factory temper. I am well aware of the oven procedure but all the mechanics and Auto zones website says to heat the oven to 600 to 650 degree's. I hardly think 450 would cut it, unless you know from personal experience it does work. I am leery to buy a Napa or Auto zone ring gear, but there dimensions spec out to the Ford original ring gear. know I just need to know hoe to go about doing the job. I know I need to pull transmission and transfer case, it was told to me to check the rear main seal and transmission seal as well. Can anyone verify any of this. Also I know there are two sides to the ring gear, a which side goes down toward the flywheel. I have been told one side has a bevel and that both sides have a bevel and one beveled side is slightly larger, WHICH IS IT????????????

you can get the ring gear from napa and have a flywheel shop resurface and replace the ring gear? thats what i did on my dads 73 f250 w/ 390
ive also seen my uncle cut the ring gear off with a cold chisel and put the new ring gear in the oven and flywheel in the freezer useualy the ring gear will slip over the flywheel
