This is from the most resent TSB on the problem.

Replace 3.5 inch steel driveshaft with 4.0 inch aluminum rear driveshaft. This requires installation of a revised fuel tank skid plate for vehicles built before 1/15/2001 equipped with the 4X4 Off-Road package.
That's EXACTLY what they did with mine last year - I didn't know why they put the aluminum driveshaft on until reading this thread...FTE is THE source for info!!!

Thanks to ALL of you who post!

Good Dealer

We hear so many horror stories about Ford dealers I thought it would be nice to let others know there are still good dealer out there. I took my 2001 Ranger XLT 4x4 Offroad in to check the driveshaft. They replaced the driveshaft, no questions asked, no arguments. I bought this truck used from the dealer about a month ago. The service guy asked if I had done the 30K mile service. I told him I didn't know if it had been done or not since I had just bought it. When they brought the truck around after it was finished I found out they had changed the oil, power flushed the transmission fluid, and did all the other 30K mile checks, NO CHARGE. I was only at the service department for 1 1/2 hours. They've won my business!

It's great to hear about good experiences like that!
It's just too bad that's the exception, rather than the rule.

It did mine...I also have the extended warranty.
I just told them what it was doing, and when I went to pick it up, it had the new driveshaft on it...cost me the $50 deductible.

I brought my Truck back to the dealer about a month after I bought it for the thumping from the driveshaft. They told me it was normal and that all the Ranger supercabs did it and offered me a ride in a new one. This sucks. They also told me my hubs were working fine, thats why they never unlocked. I had to fix them myself.

I think I'd go back to that dealership and get right in the service manager's face and DEMAND they correct the problem.

If he/she refuses, I'd contact the Regional Ford Rep and get them involved. I'd also make them know I'm not going to be satisfied until it's fixed!

I contacted the regional Ford rep in Maryland (where I bought the truck) a couple years ago, when they didn't want to replace the engine assy. in mine (ticking in valve train). The local dealer also wanted to charge me $450 for them to perform a TSB fix for the ticking. I told them I wasn't paying squat and they backed down.
My truck spent 54 days in the shop its first 3 years of service. Because of all the problems I'd had up to that point, I got the Regional Ford rep to extend my warranty to 6 years/100k miles for no charge. Sometimes you just have to get tough with them.

Of course, what I really wanted was for the dealership to buy my truck back - they wouldn't. I even took it to the Ford arbitration board with a stack of paperwork/service invoices - they made a decision to NOT do anything within 24 hours of receiving my package. They SUCK!

Thumbs up

After i bought my truck i discovered a thump but it seems to be coming from the front end.I have looked at other forums and found the same problems and fixes.
My truck is in my signature and as soon as i feel better i'll go check it and lube it,just hopes it works for me.

Not Long

It only takes about 1 hour to do the driveshaft replacement. The TSB shows .8 hours for the repair.

This might be a dumb question, but what does TSB stand for?

Sorry, TSB=Technical Service Bulletin. You can look a little further back in this thread and see the TSBs for this problem.

Tell them that's BS and give the the TSB numbers. The TSB plainly states to replace the drive shaft with the one piece unit.
