i went to the link the rocklegde had to ckeck out how to do this, but at the beginning it says that its only for 4x4 trucks with a steel driveshaft. says for all others check for other problems. says that re-lubricating the yoke will solve the problem if its a 4x4. i have a 2002 ranger edge 2wd. it seems to be doing what is described here. will this work for me??
I would like to do the spline lube for my truck since I will have the driveshaft off anyways to replace the u-joints.
I believe the spline for the 97 2wd ranger is in the back of the transmission. How much of an issue will indexing the driveshaft with the tranny before removal be? Will balance be a problem if I am a couple teeth off in reassembly?

OK, I'm having this same thump problem, but what I understand from reading this thread, you guys are talking about it happening with the 4X4. Does the same information/remedy pertain to my 4X2 also?

I lubed my driveshaft slipyoke just before christmas. The task was not particularly difficult. However, I did have some difficulty locating the correct lubricant. A friend who works for Honda procured a tube of their Moly 60 paste. They use this product on motorcycle driveshaft splines. I was assured that the moly content in this stuff is 60% where some of the other products are as little as 5%. Time will tell. The tube of the Moly 60 paste was $8 at the Honda Motorcycle parts.

What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.
It has been well over a month since I lubed the splines with the Honda Moly 60. So far so good. Time will tell. Rockledge indicated that he lubes his splines every 15k or so and I am keeping track of just how long it takes - time and mileage - before the clunk restarts.
Be sure to save a copy of the PDF file to your hard drive!
Rockledge - When you greased the splines, did you remove the rear extension seal?
I don't believe you can clean the output shaft splines unless you do. ????

Welcome to FTE.
I'm not sure what you mean by "extension seal"...?
