transmission slow into drive when cold

My truck has developed a big hesitation when first putting it into drive in the morning. I back out of my driveway, and it goes right into reverse fine. When I shift from reverse to drive it takes 5 to 10 seconds to catch. Only happens in the morning. Any ideas? 88 f150 4x4 302 c6 tranny.

Worn forward clutch servo seals would be my guess.

Do you do alot of "rolling shifts"?

As in shifting from R to D or vise versa while still in motion? That's very bad for any auto tranny and is what will burn clutchs.

What does the fluid condition/level look like?

Smell?

Do you have an Aux. tranny cooler?

No rolling shifts here- the fluid level looks fine and I havent noticed any smells but I'll check again. It shifts fine as well. Dont think it has an aux cooler.

If the fluid looks dark, give it a good flush and drop the pan/new filter, see if it helps.

I would defenently add an Aux. cooler on it. Biggest that will fit infront at a location where it's gonna get maximum air flow.

Who knows, maybe that's all she needs, and the aux cooler will help extend it's life for sure!
