Without the jet in you may have really flooded the Cylinders... It might be a good idea to pull all of the plugs, and turn the motor over a bit..aka dry fire to blow the cylinders clear! A lot of gas in the Cylinders will wash the oil off of the cylinder walls, creating a dry cylinder issue, so turn it over for only a few revolutions just enough to clear the cylinders. That will also give you a chance to inspect the plugs.

I just put new plugs/wires on it last week so the gap is good. I pulled a couple of plugs and dried them off last night. She didn't want to start again this morning so I primed the carb with a little gas and it fired right up and ran for a few minutes before I shut it off. The idle has smoothed out quite a bit but it still wants about half choke to maintain an idle. I need to send the carb off, both because it has it's own issues and because I can't set the timing until it idles correctly and i'm pretty sure the timing is off. So I think for now my issues are as cleared up as they were before I made my carb mistakes. I think once the carb is straightened out and the timing is set she'll be running pretty good.

It does sound like you are narrowing it down to a carb problem. Good luck with it.

Not trying to stir the pot on the vacuum issue.....but the load a matic distributor on these motors have no centrifical advance. None. The advance is completely vacuum operated. They also use ported vaccum.... that is how they advance....

Whom ever came up with this system needs to be slapped. It is impossible to tune and flat works like cr@p. Best way to fix it is to throw it far as you can, and find an old dual point or modify a better ditributor. My 2 cents...

That's what i've been trying to explain, there are no weights in the dizzy to get slung out and advance, just vacuum.

In doing research i've come to the same conclusion you have, the setup is pretty much junk. The only replacement dizzy i've seen is the one listed on the classic inlines website here - Classic Inlines Performance Parts - Ford Inline Six Products

What other options do I have in replacing the dizzy?

After a little research I found a Mallory YF Dual point (mech advance) for $129. Speedway motors item #5001047101. 1 left. I almost bought this, it is a great deal.......then I found you can use a 300 six distributor. You do have to change the gear and modify the oil pump drive or swap the oil pump though.
Since my slick project is on the back burner, it's not a high priority right now anyway...
Hope this helps.
