1990 Ford Ranger

I am looking to buy a small pickup soon and I was wondering how good the 1990 rangers are. Have there been any problems for that year of the ranger? Thanks for any help.

I own a '90 Ranger 2.3L and have taken very good care of it. Please, save yourself and don't buy one. I am faced with a low oil pressure problem delima at 70,000 miles. They have a bad problem with the oil pump screens plugging. Furthermore, the truck gets 20MPG ON THE HIGHWAY and less in the city without the AC running. Please, save yourself or you can buy mine.

Well, I ended up buying one in September and it sounds like you truck is very similar to mine. I only get about 20 miles to the gallon also. I haven't really had any problems with it. Except I think the starter is going out.I like the truck but I would like a fullsize truck better. So did you have to replace the filter screen, or clean it? I seem to have pretty god oil pressure

So far, I have been getting ideas from others how to clean the screen without droping the oil pan. This method takes 2-3 hours. I am going to try it next week. I'll let you know how it goes. Overall, I cannot say it's been that bad, but I wouldn't buy another 2.3L 4 cyl. My wife bought an '88 Ford Bronco II. Now that has been a great vehicle. It's got 175,000 miles and we haven't done anything to the motor except changed the oil and belts. It is a 2.9L 6 cyl. Also, this engine gets 27 MPG on the highway. I don't know about everyone else, but that has been one fine motor (truck)! Get at least a 6 cyl. on your next shopping voyage.

I've owned a 90 XLT 2.3L since she was new and love it. It's just turned 100,000 miles last month and the list of repairs over the past 10 years has gone like this: exhaust x2(thanks to the nice, salty New England winter roads), front and rear brakes once each, starter, fuel sending unit, shocks once, and most recently the ball joints. This is on top of the odd belt, battery and normal maintenance requirements. Not bad methinks. The body still looks VERY good. I did notice last winter that a little rust had started on the lower side portion of the bed but it is minimal. The finish looks nearly new. I've been thinking about trading it in for an F150 but can't seem to actually go forward with doing it. Imagine owning a vehicle for 10 years and STILL enjoy driving it. Amazing.....
