Chevy 2500HD vs F-250 vs RAM 2500HD Marketing

First things first I don't want to start a flame war.

They claim that these are "Independent AMCI" tests, but I cannot find anything other than these marketing videos about it. If they are independent tests shouldn't they be released somewhere other than Chevy's website? The Ford tailgate getting crimped and buckling is very interesting though.

Chevy Silverado HD2HD | Pickup Truck Comparison | Chevrolet.com

For instance, did the Chevy have the larger engine package that the Ford did not? Is the 0-60 test a 2wd Chevy and a 4x4 Ford? What transmissions were used? Why is the RAM truck not shown in some of the testing?

Ford has some similar videos. Questions above still apply.

fordtrucks's Channel - YouTube
2012 Ford Super Duty Truck | See the 2012 Super Duty F-250, F-350 & F-450 Pickups, Read Reviews & Get Prices | Ford.com < Has the videos from the above youtube page to show they are Ford videos.

Why don't the marking people release the real results? I'm pretty certain that Chevy isn't #1 in all the tests, and neither is Ford.

Because if you ain't cheatin you ain't tryin.

Marketing is all BS. Anyone who buys an 8000# truck because of a 2 second split in the quarter mile time or becuase of 1mpg on some controlled road test is an idiot.

Agreed. You would think so. But they probably had to sign a confidentiality agreement.

All of the test (and more) were run ahead of time, without cameras. This way they could find the weak points of the trucks and only show the ones they wanted.[/quote]

Hard to tell. Chevy trucks have always been faster that Fords. Which is great if you want a drag truck. Chevys are a poor mans Escalade. Ford are a bit slower, but Fords have bigger, heavier parts. Also, the RAM has not been used is some tests because either it wasnt available at the time of filming, or because it limited the testing. I know I've seen some tests done by Ford that had trailer weight limited because the max of the Ram was less.

No one is going to admit theirs is less worth than someone else's. They just highlight what they're is best at. Apparently Chevy is proud of their tailgates not flexing.

Couldnt have said it any better. They are marketing THEIR product, not conducting a fair test. If you were selling something would you show its weak points and failures against the competition???

GM claims that a boxed frame is better. It is less prone to flex, but more prone to breakage, as some on this forum have claimed happens when a GM truck is used heavily for plowing, the frames crack. A boxed frame is also more prone to rust. Neither one is 'better' as they both have positives and negatives, you just have to choose the benefits in your choice.

Chevrolet only has one diesel, the 6.6L Duramax, which on paper has lower numbers than the new 6.7L Power Stroke. The Duramax is paired with the Allison 6 speed automatic and the Ford is paired with the Torqshift 5 speed. According to the videos, all the trucks were 4x4s. Maybe the better acceleration is that the Allison uses all 6 gears, which would be an advantage.

Watch the frame flex video. The Ford still has all wheels on the ground, so if the truck was off road, as they are simulating, the Chevrolet would likely be stuck, while the Ford would have traction. Also, as I have asked before, how would the tailgate buckle if the gap on each side of gate remained constant? Presumably the sides of the bed would buckle and push on the gate, jamming it. Yet if you watch there is plenty of gap on each side of the gate, it just won't open. Who is to say that GM didn't lock the tailgate for that one camera shot? It wouldn't be part of the 'testing' by AMCI, so they would have no control over what GM does.

Who would prefer IFS for off road use as the GM executive stated he would rather have?

From my understanding, it only ever uses 5 forward gears and simply switches between using 4th and 5th based on transmission temperature, i.e. 1-2-3-4-6 or 1-2-3-5-6.

I was under the impression the 5R110 did the 4-5 switch according to temp, while the 6R140 was an actual 6 speed tranny. I could be wrong, I was once before.

The 5R110 is a true 5 speed. But it does have 2 4th gears with slightly different ratios, one is for cold and the other warm.

sorry, but those videos were hogwash. I'd say that if I were a Chevy guy as well.

They never come out and say what each truck was rated for. Did the Chevy have the optional weight package? Was the Ford missing the Ford version of that?

Where was the Dodge during the bedload measurements?

and then the acceleration and pulling tests. I give that company doing the tests 0 credibility. They did the passing test while rolling, from a ambiguous starting point and then had that street sweeper. Way way too many factors combined to get any conclusive result. You'd have a hard time even getting the trucks to perform that test with any acceptable level of repeatability.

If you are going to tout your truck, cool. If you want to highlight it's strenghts, even better. But out and out marketing bull****?

btw, it was funny that they mentioned the max payload for the Chevy was 21,700 (roughly), and yet didn't bring up the Fords

You are correct, 2011 trucks do have an actual 6 speed auto tranny

Guess which truck would have won the test if Ford would have hired an independent tester to do the test?

Which truck won the test using an independent testers hired by Chevy?
