No cut off would be may 5 of 2003 for the cluster! Even then I would not mess with an 03 cluster as there is to many "what if's" and it may not work right. Speedomter rebuild shops can also repair these clusters for under $200.00

I'll have to look at the wiring diagrams but aren't the locks affected by the security system?

Only if you have remote keyless entry. If you don't have RKE, there isn't a security system or security module.

I don't see any indication in the electrical diagrams (at least not in 2004) that shows door locks going through the instrument cluster either, though.

I know this is going to sound obvious and I'm not trying to insult anyone's intelligence, but have you carefully checked all your fuses? With a meter or a test light?

The original paperwork shows that it has RKE although I do not have any remotes (yet).

To the OP, you would need a manual cluster for gas or diesel, which ever you have. I have swapped out clusters in mine (02 XLT) while trying to fix another problem, which ended up not being the issue, so my original cluster went back in, but to answer questions here; the mileage stays with the cluster, but a speedometer shop can reprogram it to match the mileage on your previous cluster, you will also have to watch engine red lines, as they are different 7.3 to 6.0 in the 2003 clusters. The manual cluster will have a voltmeter instead of the trans temp gauge, otherwise the same other than gas/diesel.

I guess the diagram I was looking at wasn't complete. I'm going through the fuse panel diagrams and it shows the door lock switches coming off of the accessory delay relay, which is operated by the instrument cluster.

All fuses are OK. I wish it was that simple.

01 speedo uses a regular odometer, 02 speedo uses a digital speedo. diesel engines have a lower tach rpm than gassers. The wiring is different quite between an 01 and an 02. The 01 radio turns off with the key. The 02 radio turns off when the door is opened.

Great info. So it looks like I am bound to a 2002 cluster. Or repairing mine.

I have looked and called a couple different repair shops and no one will return my call. Any idea of where to go to get my cluster repaired?

Can I buy one from an automatic and just change the volt gauge and shifter plate?

Suggest you work with PartsguyEd.com. He can get you a replacement cluster, and have it programmed with the correct mileage for your truck.

Trying to repair is a waste of time, unless you can see an obvious bad connection.

*Update*

I bought a cluster that came out of a 2003 gas motor with a manual transmission. It plugs right up and seems to work but none of the issues are resolved (with the exception that the key chime started working).

Called Ford and the parts department will not help me at all with part number look up.

I asked about a VSM and they swear I don't have one. I looked under the dash and bigger than Stuttgart, I see one. The part number is 2C7T-15K602-AG. I gave them the number and they said it has changed some since new but won't tell me what the part number is.

Is it possible that the 2003 dash just won't work even though it is configured the same as my 2002?

Is it possible that the VSM (that does not exist) is the culprit?

I just wish someone would help me without me spending 1,000 dollars!
