Transmission control solenoid problem?

Hey guys, been awhile but my Ranger has developed a probelem with the tranny! I have a 2002 4x4 with the 4.0 and automatic tranny(120,000 mi.). It has started having a problem shifting form 2nd to 3rd gear.. It shifts from 1st to 2nd ok but revs. high and hits 3rd kinda hard when making the transition! Reverse is also kinda wierd! But anyway, I think it is a control solenoid, but I haven't found any info on it on line yet. Can you guys help? I found a site for the Explorers about the same year, where there are actually 4 of these solenoids, and they are inside the tranny! I would have to drain and drop the pan and replace them..Is this correct? When I looked up the part it, it has an obviose eletrical conection to it, like a wire harness, 2 tabs. and also where is it located on the tranny if it is able to be replaced from the exterior?

thanks for the help!

This is why I like Manual tranny's, something goes wrong you just change the baring or gear or seal. Easy-peasy repair or replace. I'd say your tranny has seen its better days and is getting ready to go due to bad bands. I had a Caravan that acted like you say yours is doing... I got about 1000 miles out of it then all I had was reverse. You may try Lucas Transmission fix / repair and it may help the bands but you will need to replace it. I suggest going to a yard and find a nice looking one that was rearended or t boned and has low mmiles and ask them to drop the tranny, you can get it for about 3-800USD

This not the answer I'm looking for!

I need to know from somebody who has been here, and has done that.. i.e. replaced the control solenoids etc. there are no more "bands" as they say. It is all electro magnetic solenoids now! The problem I'm, having was consistant with "old time" modulater valves! Now adays they have a modulator "modual" that controls the solenoids! Electro-magnetic sensors and such! the dealer is going to say I need a complete rebuild, when I have a suspision it is a bad solenoid! or 2! They are suposedly, from what I found, part of the "valve body" inside the tranny! but you only need to remove the pan to get to them... same as replacing the filter!

any real help would be appreciated!
