transmission availibilty

i was reading early ford truck shop manual and comparing the part numbers. i concluded that most of the transmissions have many similar parts including the gear case. it seems then that a three speed syncro transmission would bolt to my bell housing and take the place of the spurgear 4 speed that i have. has anyone else made this change to his truck. i have a 52 f3 with a 215 six.

You would need to fab the trans mount - The crossmembers are shaped differently

Dick - You sure about that? The sychro 3HD was an option on the F-3s and I've never seen one with a different transmission cross member. Stu

I got the impression that he was talking about the F1 Light Duty Three Speed - I guess that we need more information for the OP

The light duty (3 on tree) trans behind my flat 8 came off of a 215 six...uses the same rear saddle mount. Only difference is the "ring" bellhousing, same input shaft, clutch, etc....

So, if I'm not mistaken, an F-3 with the 4-sp crashbox would have the big "hoop" crossmember, right? So just about any trans will fit in there, including a T5, SROD, SMOD, with overdrive. Some fab work for the rear mount, but not having to cut the stock crossmember would be worth it.

Ford type 3.03 3 speed manual all sycromesh transmission introduced in 1962.

Will be found in 1962/83 F100's, 1962/79 F250's, 1966/77 Bronco's, 1967/79 F350's, 1975/86 F150's, 1965/87 E100/150's, and a gazillion 1962/80 Passenger Cars.

Some 1962/68 Passenger Cars with I-6's do not use this trans, use the light duty 2.77 trans with a non syncro 1st.

Thanks Kevin. I've got extras too. I'll be a home of last resort for the flattie if you need to clear shop space, but don't have a burning need for it right now. Stu

I have a T-98 4 speed that came out of a 56 F100....floor shift with a non-synchro first gear....but I'm sure that you can find the same thing closer to St. Louis. This one weighs a ton (well not really a ton, but it is heavy) so it'd be a truck freight item.

transmission availability

hey 55, i might be interested in your truck 3 speed (think i might be able to fix the syncro problem). but please let me know if norm wants to part with a t 98. i think that would be pretty much a bolt in. a floor shifter would be preferred since i dont have any column shift linkage. besides the floorshifter looks more truck like. let me know what norm says yea or neigh
