hey goys i have a 91 150 im wondering what the best way to go about doing this is, do i go at it from the bottom and undo it? it seems pretty simple but is there anything i should know about doing it, got my reman steering box today... mine old one is hard to keep between the lines lol

I hope that you are strong...heavy as heck one handed, other hand busy starting the bolts, and a awkward position under the truck...be very carefull not to cross thread the bolts, soft cast/threading's in it..

is the pitman arm puller a must need? ir is there another tool that can be used?

 

I have never done this job, but I understand that the Pittman arm can be a bear to remove. You will most likely need a good puller and it would not hurt to have a torch handy just in case.

A friend of mine who's been through these jobs suggested putting a 2x4 across the engine bay under the hood and tie the steering box from it so it does not drop when you remove the bolts. Also you can use it with a pulley or similar set up to hold the new one while you bolt it back on.

I might try doing it to my truck too. Those things seem to wear out pretty damn quickly. My truck only has 79K miles and it already shows signs of steering play

 

where can you get these pullers at? would napa have them? and i know what you mean mine has an excuse though with 233,000 miles and big tires lol

 

How about internet? the one i used costs around $19, and even less. The puller is a MUST, there are some conical ones which are a little pricier but apparently work even better. Get the K/D tools brand, they're very tough.

 

You can rent or buy one, but it's a requirement. There is no way you're getting the old one off without one. If you are a strong guy you can hold the box up with one hand and thread the bolts in with the other. I did it but my chiropractor was pretty PO'd at me.

Azone will rent it for a small deposit, like $20 and you get it back when you return it.

Just did my '89 F150. Ya, it's a bear to hold up there and get the bolts started. Another set of hands would be great(if you find a set). I got it wedged up in there and wiggle a bolt in. Yes, don't cross thread it as it will likely strip the box holes out. Be careful.
