havi's pic is the Shell station at the Gilmore Museum in Hickory Corners, MI. I was there for the first time this past week, & it is fantastic, HIGHLY recommended for anyone who likes old automobilia. The placard on the pretty F1 in Shell livery in the garage says it's a '50, but it has a floor shift(?) You can drive right up to the pumps & snap a pic of your ride, very nice.
Beef'er, that kid is going to wear himself out jumping up & down, the attendant is a mannikin!

To think back in those days, an attendant actually checked your oil, washed your windows, and filled your gas tank. I remember the Texaco team that was advertised on the Milton Berle show that had about seven guys in uniform coming out to service your car. Atlantic had Red Ball service; I sure there were others as well.
Free air for your tires and water for the radiator. Now, like the man driving the ’69 Camaro in the Viagra commercial, you have to buy your own bottled water! You have to pay for air, if you can find it, but the compressor is an air diaphragm that takes 20 minutes to inflate to 20lb psi.
My first experience with self-service was in Wyoming on the way to Yellowstone in 1968. They had an intercom you would speak into and tell them how much gas you wanted. Being the wise guy, I asked if they could check my oil. No dice, but they did let me fill-up without paying first.

These are two pictures of a gas station in Old Town Cottonwood, AZ that has been turned into a café. The 51 Plymouth is permanently parked there.
The back billboard shows the Vette used in the Route 66 TV show but the sign was changed to show Route 89A for this location. A portion of Route 66 still goes through Flagstaff which is about 75 miles north.
