2006 F350 5.4 Gas to 6.0 Diesel Conversion?

Not something I plan on doing anytime soon, but I was wondering how hard it would be to convert my 2006 F350 Super Duty with the 5.4L Triton V8 Gas engine and automatic transmission over to the 6.0L Powerstroke Turbo Diesel with the 6-speed manual transmission. I would obviously need the engine and transmission, but if i'm not mistaken, the brakes are different on the diesel models. I would assume axle gearing would be different also, as well as the wiring and many other things, but I was hoping for some input. Thanks in advance!

I'll stop short of saying it's impossible but it would be a huge undertaking, and very expensive. You could probably just buy a diesel truck with the money it would cost to do the swap. Then you would have both a diesel and a gas truck, for the same price and save yourself hundreds of hours of work.

X2 , buy a different truck. With that being said the brakes and the axles are the same between a gas and a diesel truck.

OR just skip the problematic 6.0L's altogether. I'd rather have a kick in the nuts once a week than do that swap.

So you would rather get married than do that swap?

If you want to swap in a diesel, just do the Cummins swap and send me a check for the $2000 you won't spend on fixing the 6.0 problems.

It would be easier to swap a Cummins engine into your truck.

6.0Ls aren't exactly rare, it'll cost 2-3x more to convert a gasser over than to just buy an entire truck that came from the factory with one. $5-10k in labor (even if you do it yourself your time isn't free), $8-10k in parts, two weeks to a couple months with your truck down, a few grand in specialty tools unless you're already a stocked up gearhead. All for something you get currently running in a second truck for $15k-25K, minus whatever you could sell your current truck for.

Just a question but why would you prefer a 6.0 to a 12v cummins? The 6.0 has known problems while the 12v cummins has a reputation for long life and reliability. I'd stack it up against the 7.3 for reliability.

Don't get me wrong, I hate Dodge too, but IMO the cummins engine is the only reason Dodge is still in the truck business.

But in answer to your question: Buy a new truck w/ the 6.0.

Newer Diesel trucks have a hydraulic brake booster - are the newer gasoline engine truck brakes vacuum or hydraulic boosted?

2011 6.7L F250 and 2012 F250/F350 6.7L are vacuum boosted. AFAIK the other diesels used hydroboost, and gassers were used vacuum. But that really only changes the master cylinder, power steering pump/hydroboost and the booster on the firewall. The actual brakes on the axles are, from a performance stand point, pretty much identical. Looking at it for a swap, to drop a 6.0L into a truck that came with a 5.4L you'd have to change out the booster, MC, maybe the junction block, and rework the entire vacuum system. More reasons the swap isn't really feasible from a cost perspective.

5.4 performance question

I bought a pre-owned 2008 F250 with the 5.4 gas engine. 300 HP, 365 Torque. I test drove both the gas and deisel and of course as far as power the deisel had awesome power out of the gate and acceleration on the highway. The gas does not have the power out of the gate but it does have good power/acceleration on the highway. I always wanted a Super Duty but I only haul a pop-up (under 3000 lbs) and the deisel wasn't practicle for my needs. I see all kinds of compaints about the 5.4 in the SD. Poor milage, power, torgue, engine too small for the SD. But I was a Dodge man for years and I had a 06 Ram with a 4.7 and the mpg in that truck matches or is poorer than what I'm getting in my SD. I have the Flowmaster exhaust, and cold air intake and I feel a slight power increase. MPG is about 13 city but has improved to 19 on the highway. Being a new gear head I'm fooling with the idea of a performance chip and tuner to boost the HP. But I have heard so many conflicting opinions on they improve the deisels performance but not the 5.4 gas. Has any one installed a chip and tuner in the 5.4 and had a bad experience?

You should start another thread, but if you want a tune for your engine, get in touch with 5 Star and get the exact tune you want. A custom tune will work better for you compared to a canned tune.
