anyone know how to check a tfi module?

I am looking for info on chking my TFI module off my 88 F150 with 5.0 AOD. I know I can take it in to be tested at AZ or Advance, but I do not always trust what I find at those places, as I know alot of times, they receive NO training on it. I am doing a custom installation of the 5.0 EFI & AOD trans into my 67 Fairlane. I have no spark currently at the plugs, coil chks ok, tach lead is pulsing, so I am guessing stator is ok....

Anyone... Bueller? Bueller? Bueller?

Pulling codes out of the computer may help you trace the problem.

Talking anyone know how to check a tfi module?

This is a transplant job. The car has not run yet. This is why I am chasing the no spark problem. I installed the engine & trans from a 88 F150, into my 67 Fairlane. I have swapped a 91 Mustang top end onto the motor in place of the truck intake (makes air inlet lined up better on pass side). I have also installed a COMPLETE 91 Mustang harness into the car. I have used only must have Fairlane switches, otherwise, original Mustang items have been used. But injectors & distributor are stock truck items. I have found they are compatible with the A9 Mustang computer I am using. A/T Mustang stuff with A/T truck stuff. Sounds like a headache, but it is coming along nicely. Got some pics if you are interested. RSO

I hope you have a good ford fuel injection book. They sell one on this site's store.
I am thinking if you do a KOEO code pull, the computer will look itself over, and it might see something you have forgotten, or something it doesn't like.

I have a Jeff Probst book. To be honest.. I had not thought of checking it that way. As I have not started it yet, it did not occur to me to check that option. An easy starting point, if I get nothing from it, I have lost nothing. Thanx Franklin2!

Still happliy taking anyones input on this though. RSO

DJ, I'm wondering about the tach pulsing.....dosen't this mean that the TFI module is working, and grounding the coil primary circuit (as is normal)?

Are you sure you have power to the coil positive terminal, with the key on?

show voltage on both sides with key on. I took franklin2's advice and ran KOEO last night. Got code 67 (neutral saftey switch related) & 85 (canister purge solenoid). 85 is dead on (not hooked up at this time. Going to persue 67 this weekend in between downpours (did I mention I have no garage & a gravel driveway...?) Anyways, thanx for the advice, keep it coming, I will update if/when it changes. Always open to more info though~! RSO

The Haynes manual has a good diagnostic procedure for the whole ignition system, and a parts store should be able to test the module for you.
