Unless you have a lot of mods and are pushing some serious Hp, you'd be better off sticking with the stock setup. The stock Donaldson filter is good to up to 500 hp and filters better than anything out there.

What he said. ^^^^^

The stock system was designed by Donaldson and uses the same technology that they designed for air filters on engines run underground in dusty mines, among other things. It flows air better, filters better and lasts longer than just about anything around.

Add cold air by doing the zoodad mod. And save yourself $500.

I'm guessing you didn't check the review tab on that page? Dude ended up using duct tape to seal it in housing.

Keep the intake system stock. It filters the BEST. It also FLOWS great up to 500hp. Unless you have big injectors with a big turbo. You do not need aftermarket intake system. Trust us on this one. Research this forum some more and think it over.

It also last for a very long time before it wants to be replaced.

thank all of you for the response. i am going to do some mods, exhaust, egr valve and cooler delete, edge tuner, ect. but not bigger injectors or bigger turbo. I was thinking the cost of the OEM replacement filter was expensive, and that was driving me toward one that is washable. what is the zoodad mod? i looked at the filter and i have access to a machine shop so i can make things work. is there a cheaper outlet for the OEM replacement?

Home - Diesel Filters,Additives, brake rotors, and brake pads for Chevy, Dodge and Ford Diesel Trucks has the air filter and oil and fuel filters. Both the OEM Motorcraft and Racor oil and fuel filters are good, don't use any others.

Also, the OEM air filter is good for a very long time. There are some here with over 100k miles on the OEM air filter. You just watch the filter minder and change it when it moves.

some have told me that the filter minder is not accurate and should not be trusted. i was thinking the same because mine has 110k and still not said it needs a new filter. the truck is getting hard to start. and i blamed the fuel filters and the air filter. i have ordered the fuel filters but was not sure what to do for the air. you think it is still good? i have my doubts.

Pull the filter minder out of its socket. It'll be a little difficult and a little twist will help but it should just pop out. Suck on it. It should take very little suction to move the disk and the disk shouldn't return back to zero. If the disk doesn't move, or it moves back to zero then it's broken and needs replaced.

I suspect the filter minder is OK and you will see how very little vacuum it takes to move it. That's how little vacuum exists in the intake pipe. That means the filter is flowing plenty of air.

Push the button on the opposite end of the filter minder to allow the disk to move back to zero.

With some searching, you probably can find information, but info might be in archives from a few years ago.

In any case, the air is intaked through the synthetic frame behind the grill.

Stock, that opening is about 1" x 2". You can use drimel, or hole saw to make that opening larger, or add openings to the side of the synthetic frame. There are only a couple of screws to take the grill lose. After that, you mod how you see fit to increase the cold air to the stock filter system.
