The pedal not fully releasing could be resulting in your clutch slipping 100% of the time, resulting in excess heat & smoke from the clutch area.

I'm assuming it was an asbestos-like smell (comes from clutch & brakes) as opposed to oil or electrical?

In any event, I'd spend tonight removing the transmission and opening up the clutch to investigate, replacing it will be the weekend's task.

Yes, it very well could be, I'd spend tonight disassembling everything.

I will bet you (no, not really ) that your clutch is shot, and you'll be able to see that upon removing the pressure plate from the flywheel.

A clutch kit - includes throwout bearing, pilot bearing, alignment tool, pressure plate & clutch disc - can be had for less than $100 on sale. Look on Rock Auto's site to see what some of your options.

RockAuto Auto Parts

Remember, though, nobody here has SEEN your truck, and diagnosis over the Internet is a best-effort affair.

IOW there could be more involved than perhaps even you are aware of; for example, an engine or transmission that, for whatever reason, is dumping fluid into the clutch assembly....
