I was greasing the steering components the other day and noticed that I have two torn grease boots. The grease still stays in, and I re-grease every 3K miles or so. I talked to my shop and was told that it was not serious and not to worry about it. Can the boots be replaced or would I have to replace parts? I'm not looking to spend much money on this.
You can absolutely replace just the boots, as long as the part itself is OK. I have replaced many tie rod and drag link boots, all with polyurethane ones from Energy Suspension.
As far as whether it's "OK" to run them with a torn boot, that's up for debate. My sense says no. The boot is there to maintain lubrication AND keep water and foreign matter out.
i have the same problem, but i bought universal ones from napa and only a month later they are all cracked and falling apart. i was told you cant buy boots that i have to buy a new link end and replace the whole dam thing!
