Year, model, casting numbers always help.

A 3 speed that was used on sixes, SBF, BBF and even GM stuff was the "303" all synchro three speed intro'd (iirc) in 1964 in cars, and maybe a year or so earlier in light trucks.

Transmission, 3speed V-8 RAN

It is an iron cased, side-shifted, top-loading box. Is that what you're looking at?

Good trans, but it is a 3 speed....

Another better image:

There were several other 3 speeds, for SBF/BBF duty those would be the BW T85 and similar, issued earlier, as well as beside the 303.

Something like this:

Note those are again, iron case, side shifted but are side loaded. These are the transmissions used with OD.

Type 3.03 intro'd in 1963 (could be a RAN or RAT), was initially used in 1963/64 F100/250's and 223 I-6 Galaxies & V8: Galaxies, Fairlanes & (63 1/2/64) Falcon's.

Was not used with 144/170 & (and in some cases) 200 I-6's until later in the 1960's. These engines initially used the type 2.77 1st gear crash box.

So, a 1963 and later Ranchero...depending on year/engine size, could have either 3 speed trans.

Borg Warner T-85 3 speed manual w/overdrive: 1942/48 Lincoln/Continental / 1949/51 Lincoln/Cosmopolitan / 1963/64 Galaxie 352/390 / 1965/67 Galaxie/LTD 352 / 1965/67 F100 240/300/352 / 1968/71 F100 240/300/360/390 / 1969/71 F100 302.
