carb issues on a 226

Hi all, I'm having some carb issues on the 226 inline in my F-3. The truck starts fine but idles rough and cannot be brought down to a normal idle speed without stalling out. At the lowest speed I can get it to stay alive, about 900 RPM or so, it stumbles and hiccups. If I spray a little bit of carb cleaner down it while it's running it smooths out and can be idled down just fine but the instant I remove the spray it goes back to running very poorly then quits. I suspect it's just that my old carb is pretty well shot, I've already established that the throttle shaft is badly worn, but I wanted to ask if anyone else has experienced this and what they found it to be before I go hunting for a replacement. thanks!

Have you tried adjusting the idle mixture screw? If you have and it makes no difference, then it sounds to me like it's ready for a rebuild or replacement. Rebuild kits are readily available and not too hard to install, but if your throttle shaft is worn then it might not help much. It will suck air around the shaft and the additional air can be enough to lean it out considerably at an idle. How does it run at higher RPM's?

I have been through the carb, made sure that all the passages and what not were clear, the only two issues that I came accross were the severly worn throttle shaft, and a potential vacuum leak between the base plate and main body of the carb. After doing what can be done to correct these two issues, it still runs just about the same. One question though, does anyone have the correct specs for the float height adjustment?
