F1 (1951) onepiece Drive shaft

Hi Guys & Gals,
Hope all is good with you all, well nearly completed my F1 restoration, its been a mad 18months, just fitting the drive shaft back on & have noticed it is very tight between the rear axle fitting & the gear box only have a 1/4 (quater of a inch) free travel on gear box spline i.e. if i try to push forwrd up the gear box spline it bottoms out, can anyone please tell me if this is normal or okay if it isnt does anyone know what it should be.

Thanks for reading hope you can help.

have a good day

Trev

Not normal. Should have more movement than that. Not sure how much more, I just know that is too tight. I think I have about an inch on my 56 driveshaft.

Ditto. 1" of available slip yoke travel with no load and the full weight of the truck on the suspension is considered to be about optimal to allow for driveline length changes due to suspension movement. Any less than that and you risk the yoke bottoming out and causing damage to the pinion bearings, driveshaft, u-joints, and transmission. With only 1/4" of travel, you be lucky to get more than a couple miles without breaking something. Something somewhere has been changed along the way. Are you running the original transmission or is it a swap?

Agree with everyone else... I was thinking about 3/4 to one inch is what you should have. What was changed on your drivetrain? Did you move anything? Engine, trans & rear end are you using? I can measure mine if your running on the darkside. Did you move anything?
