1978 Ford Crew Cummins Swap
#122
It's less power than I expected for sure. The turbo kicks in pretty late and that's part of the problem. Nothing a little tuning won't fix. I'm used to my '99 Power Stroke with an 80 hp chip that just flat hauls *** loaded and hauling a trailer. I'm still getting used to how the Cummins makes power. Gas pedal is set in towards the firewall more than I'm used to. The OD helps a lot. Gears are too low for my intended purpose. 65 mph is wound pretty tight.
Trans shifts great. (Thanks for the help fellas.) Had to get a little creative with the pressure switch. It was threaded 1/8" fine thread and the trans was 1/8" npt. Had a machinist buddy thread a plug and got it fixed up. I've got a video on my iPhone, but have no idea how to post it. Anyone?

I hear that if you change the exhaust housing on the turbo you're using from the 22mm to a smaller 17mm it's a whole different animal.. Dont know how to upload from iPhone... Hope you figure it out, I'm dying to see your truck in action... Especially since I have the same parts waiting to go in

Here is a pic of my buddies 60 crew cab. I've been meaning to post pics of this thing. It's on a 75 frame with a step side from the same era. It's a pretty cool truck. Makes you feel like your riding in a 57 Bell Air. He keeps telling me the 12v is gay and that he's gonna blow my doors off. I'm gonna race him past every gas station on our next hunting trip.

Well, after getting all the bugs worked out, this thing is awesome. I was a little on the fence at first but after getting the od going, doing the throttle linkage mod and a new brake booster it's a kick in the butt to drive. I'm really liking the auto trans. Plumbed/wired an ac switch for the od and it works great. I'll probably put in a different TC down the road.
The drivelines don't wiggle at all so glad we got the angles all right. Ordering the front shaft tomorrow. Speedo cable and t case linkage is about all that's left after that.

Well, I tried two DMV offices and ended up at the referees this morning. What a joke. None of the laws make any sense. But, whatever. I have to wire in the PCM, fuel heater, tps and check engine light. I thought I was gonna have to change the inter cooler to the stock Dodge, but he said it'd be ok. Lucked out on the GVWR. Mines rated to 8,100 and the Dodge is 8,700. Would have shut me down but my trucks a "Federal" truck. Whatever that means. The fella was really cool and big into diesels. Kinda bummed I gotta wire all that garbage in, but beats the heck out of a no go.
