I have had a nice quality turbocharger laying around, it is a little big, but will do. My goal at first is to run 5 psi of boost just to get the truck up and running. I am guessing that will yield about 50 hp. My question is, will the stock fuel system, injectors and pump, allow me to run 5 psi of boost of will I have issues. I just planned on getting and adjustable FPR since it is such low boost levels, until I got a tune.

You will need an FMU, not a FPR.

What year is the truck/motor?

 

Its an '04 4.6.

 

You'll probably run out of range with your factory air meter which no FMU can compensate for. You can upgrade to a GEN 2 Lightning MAF and 42lb injectors fairly cheap, and it would make tuning much easier.

 

Why would I get 42 lb injectors? I'm shooting for 300hp not 500. My truck would get 3 mpg and would smoke like a diesel cmon now.

 

Because 42lb injectors would be appropriately sized for a 4.6L seeing 5 psi from a turbo. Irregardless, you'll need a tune. Just sticking a FMU or adjustable FPR on there isn't going to cut it.

Are you stating facts? Do you have personal experience or know someone who has run 19# injectors with an FMU on 5psi of boost that had major issues? I'm not trying to say you are wrong, I just would like specific issues you know of that happened, not here-say. I have found a half dozen 4.6's that ran up to 7 psi on the stock 19# injectors. This is my DD so I wont be running wide open all the time, I have probably only shifted wide open a dozen times since I got the truck 6 months ago. So the injectors wont even see that kind of abuse very often.

 

No, I have not tried running undersized injectors with a FMU without a tune while pushing 5 psi.....I don't "rig" my junk. I prefer to do things once, the correct way. But good luck to you.

 

Why do companies make FMU's? Why do companies sell them with turbo/ supercharger kits? They work, not as good as a tune, but they work. And when I am trying to create my rear mount build on a budget, that is the method I prefer. My only question is would it work, not do you think I am rigging my setup. Thanks

Kenne Bell is a pretty reputable supercharger manufacturer wouldn't you say? He sells it for his kits, and many many people have achieved real results with fmu's in other applications. This arguement was never about FMU's it was about the injectors, can they support ~300hp. Get real kid.

To answer your question, running 100% duty cycle, with a BFSC of 0.65, 300hp (at the flywheel) requires 24.375 lb/hr injectors. Running the injectors at an acceptable level (85% duty cycle), you'd need 28.676 lb/hr injectors. But what do I know?

If you want to buy a Kenne Bell FMU, I have two of them sitting here brand new in the packaging.

No, if your truck is tuned properly, it will NOT smoke and get far better than 3 mpg's. I have 62's in mine and it runs no different than the 42's, 30's and 19's I once had in it before, under normal driving conditions...again, it is tuned properly for these injectors and the MAF that I'm running.

Running an FMU will work Ok if your factory air meter doesn't run beyond the range of the ECU. If it does, then the motor will go lean in a hurry, plain and simple.

 

My first blower kit was an AED (Allen Engine Development) kit with 5 PSI and used an FMU with the 19# injectors. No computer tuning.
Did it work? Yes.
But it worked a lot better when I upgraded to 42# injectors and a 90mm MAF with a custom tune.
I have since moved on and am running 60# injectors( different setup) and still get 14.5 MPG on the highway.
