I want to do a port matching on my 302 heads,but never done it before.I'm using a exhaust gasket to see how much I need to take out.in the exhaust outlet has a smog bump or something like that,do I need to grind it out too?need to do intake too?I would say.cheers for help,Tushy

 

What is the casting numbers on your heads? You will see the biggest benefits from port matching the exhaust sides. That's where the main restriction is on Fords. Intakes are not so bad for street use, and you want to keep some of the casting bumpiness in there to keep the air/fuel mixture mixed up. Too much polish on the intake side will allow the fuel to drop out of suspension, losing more than you'd ever gain from the work done.

Using the header gasket is a good measuring device. Check the mainfolds/headers, too. Ideally, you want the head port about 1/16" smaller than the manifold for anti-revision. You don't have to go in very far. Maybe 1/2-3/4". You're just looking for a good, even transition. If you have a big smog bump in the middle of the port, you may be able to get rid of most, if not all of that, depending on which heads you have.
