87 Econoline 350 Headlights Don't Work

Hi, I'm having a problem with my motorhome. My headlights don't work at all, not even highbeams. All the taillights and sidemarker lights work just not the headlights. Where do I start?

So when you switch your lights on, all of them work except for your headlights?

If so, I would check to see if you have power at the plug where the headlights plug in.
If you do, then maybe a fuse?

I am just speaking from general knowledge, I have never owned or even seen a 87 Econoline 350.

Also I forgot, maybe the bulbs are bad? Each bulb has two settings, regular and highbeam, if one goes out, the other one can still work.

One time one of my brake lights went out, and it would turn if when I turned on all my lights, but it wouldn't brighten when I pressed the brake. I removed the bulb, and sure enough, one of the stems was fried.

Just some insight.

I would be suspicious of the low/high-beam switch.

I had that happen in my 1990 F250, was just a the high beam switch on the floor that went bad. 5$ later fixed the problem.

I do not have the Econoline wiring diagrams, so cannot be totally sure on wire colors. Ford did make most of their wiring colors universal throughout their fleets though.

This is for a 1987 F-150, but your Econoline should be simular...

A: Check the Black/Orange stripe wire for power at the headlamp switch. This is always on from the battery. If no power check the fuse links or for bad wiring to the switch. If Power go on to the next step.

B: Check the Red/Yellow stripe wire at the connector at the headlamp switch. If Power go to next step. If no power replace the headlamp switch.

C: Check the Red/Yellow stripe wire at the dimmer switch with the headlamp switch on. If power, go to next step. If no power, repair wiring between dimmer switch and headlamp switch.

D: Check for power at either the Light Green/Black wire (Hi Beam), or Red/Black wire (Low Beam) for power at the dimmer switch with the headlamp switch on. Alternate the dimmer switch between low and high beam. If no power to either wires, or it does not alternate power between the wires replace dimmer switch. If power alternates with the switch, the switch is working, go to next step.

E: Check for power at the headlamp connector with the headlamp switch on. Either Light Green/Black, or Red/Black. Alternate the dimmer switch to check both wires for power. If no power to either wire, or power does not alternate between them with the dimmer switch, repair wiring between headlamp connector and dimmer switch connector. If power alternates between the two wires, go to next step.

F: Do a continuity test at the Black ground wire. (If you are using a test lamp, hook one end of the lamp to the Black ground wire and another to a 12V power source (The hi or low beam circut would be ideal. or just use a multimeter set to ohms and hook one end to the ground wire and the other to some bare grounded metal on the truck.) If infinity at the ground wire (Test Light doesn't light etc..), repair grounds. If continuity at the ground wire (Test light lights), replace headlamp bulbs.
