New V10 owner here, scared to see my mpg's

Well I found an 03 F-250 crew cab with a V10 and 90,000 miles on it. Needless to say, I fell in love with it. The truck is in very good shape, and has been babied. I found this site, and it seems that everyone pretty much loves their V10. It seems that everyone is getting around 12 mpg give or take a mile unloaded, and maybe 10 mpg loaded down. Well as soon as I left the lot yesterday, I Filled it to the top, set the trip meter, an off I went. I have been completely unloaded and driving like an old lady, and as she sits right now, I have logged 214 miles, and the needle sits right between 1/4 and 1/2 of a tank. THATS GOT ME NERVOUSE!! I wont be able to tell untill tomorrow when I fill it back up and put a pencil to it. Anyways, I plan on waiting till the light comes on, then I will fill it up and do the math. Does this sound right 214 miles and a needle between 1/4 and 1/2??

LOL, sounds better than mine gets.

The V-10 is a lot of things, but good on gas is not one of them. The pull great, they rev like monsters and are reliable engines, but they suck when it comes to mileage. I generally get around 10 unless I'm pulling my TH, then I'm in the 8 1/2 to 9 range. BUT, I run 315 tires and 4:30 gears. The right tires and gears will make a difference, but you'll never see a major one.

Mine moves off of Full after about 10 miles, but through trial and error have figured out that when my "Low Fuel" light comes on I still have about 5 gallons (out of the 29 gallons it can carry). My fuel light came on the other day, I was at 220 miles.

AND, even in the face of all that, you'll still LOVE it! I hate filling mine up with gas, but love driving it. It's a trade off as far as I'm concerned.

On my truck (the 29gallon tank) when I get down to 1/4 tank it takes around 19-20 gallons to fill it. Doesn't sound like your doing to bad mileage wise. Last mpg calculation I took a week ago, 11.37mpg with a mix of highway, city, pulling my utility trailer and idling at driveups a few times. Not bad but not good either.

Your expectations are about right. However, there are at least two different gas tank sizes, plus the gauges aren't terribly accurate. Of course, there's quite a variety of shoe sizes, too......

Tire sizes and gearing ratios will also have an effect, but you just won't know until you've burned a few tanks....

I too felt bad about my mpg but then I began looking at every other truck out there and really dont feel so bad. I had a 5.4 that got around 15 and when pulling my camper got five. The V10 gets 12 and then 8 pulling the camper, My old 6.0 Diesel was getting 9 pulling the camper, how much cheaper than diesel is gas now days. Look at the new 6.2 gas burner, might get 15 on the highway and ten pulling. I only paid 28000 for my 09 F250, a 2011 would be 55000. How much gas can I buy with $27000. Besides if your not pulling, drive the wifes car for the MPG's and save the truck for pullin

Wow, I didnt know they had 29 gallon tank. I was thinking they had a 38 gallon for some reason. If it has a 29 gallon, that will really help. I will find out tomorrow evening either way!!! Lets keep our fingers crossed...

The Excursions V10 has a 44 gal. tank. Pumps cut off at $100 and it's only 3/4 tank full. Always need to do 2 transactions.

Same here, i can put in about 25ish gallons after my light comes on (2000 CC 4x4, shortbed, 29 gal tank).

Of course now that I have a 5 star tuner, my mileage is suffering a bit. Mostly because I haven't been driving as "gentle" as before, because it's too much fun!!!

OH and I "was" getting around 12-13 unloaded, 9-11 lightly loaded.

Thanks for all the info guys, I really appreciate it. Like I said before, if I can get 12 unloaded, and 10 loaded, I will be VERY VERY happy. When I bought it, after doing as much reasearch as possible, this seemed to be about right. And if I have a 29 gallon tank, that will be about right. I cant believe I am actually excited about filling up tonight so that I can calculate. Thanks for the info guys, andI will post my finding tonight.

^^^^

Wish my SB had a 38gallon tank. I would like the 46gallon transfer flow tank but can't justify the cost.
