New V10 owner here, scared to see my mpg's
#16
My 2003 still looks brand new and I have about 66k on the clock. I put 4.30's in it and can get 12.8 mpg (Using the GV) on a road trip to Utah whenever I can escape from the PRK on the I-15.
(A lot of that is up hill, too) Towing is another story. I jump with glee if I can get 8mpg (only on no grades at all, and there are few flats in hilly PRK).
Thankfully I have a 38gal tank. Unthankfully, ethanol laced fuel does little to help.
I use no oil between changes, and revving to over 5 grand is not uncommon. Oh, and I have never blown a spark plug either, like my uncle's V8 Triton just did. I hope I have the re-engineered heads on mine!

Nice Pops!
When I used to pull my TH with my F150, I would routinely rev over 4500 and it sounded like the valves were going to shoot out of the top of the engine,
Conversely, the last time I pulled the Cajon Summit with my SD & my TH, I hit the top in 2nd gear, going damn near 60mph, 4500rpm's and I could barely hear the engine. AND I was still accelerating.
I only got 8.5mpg on that trip, but it was WELL worth it!

Just made a 5 hour run each way to pick up a travel trailer, went 13.8mpg down unloaded, 7.5 back with the ~7500lb TT.
Had an extended annoyingly slow work zone and the scangague reports the truck is happy at 45mph. Over 10mpg easy tooling along at 45mph.
I'm not that patient though, it will be 7.5mpg for me it appears.

For me v10 cc 2wd dry around town driving 10mpg seems to be a solid number. I am gonna change plugs and PVC soon. As I seem to go thru about a 3/4 of a quart of oil between oil changes. IF I do just hwy driving dry I get about 14 but I do almost pure city driving. I also only drive this truck about 200 miles a month.

Since your truck has 90,000 miles on it, I recommend checking your spark plugs. It is likely no previous owner changed them because Ford says they are good for ~100,000 miles. Don't worry about the plug wires, your truck doesn't have any.
You will also want to check your air filter and MAF sensor. I bought my truck with 142,000 miles on it and found that it was still on the original plugs. I changed them, cleaned the MAF sensor, air filter (K&N) and replaced the fuel filter. My MPG jumped from about 9MPG to about 12MPG. On the highway I routinely get about 14.5 - 15.5 MPG. See my sig for specs on my truck.

I acquired a free car for mileage and the V10 for fun! 9.7-10 is average for me but that is not much highway driving. My 06 5.4 only averaged 11.5. If we can ever do some traveling with a travel trailer I may look into a larger tank so I wouldn't have to pull over every 150 miles to fill up while towing a heavy load. I know these tanks are around a grand but it would be nice not to need to stop all the time. But I love this truck. I probably wouldn't if I had to drive it to work every day.
Sorry to get off topic here but these mileage threads always crack me up, in any of the forums (this is not directed at the OP). I had a GSXR-600 that got 40+ mpg. Friends would say "Man I need to buy one of those, my vehicles gas mileage is killing me." So you want to keep your current vehicle and then go spend 9 grand on bike plus a helmet, jacket, gloves, more insurance, etc... to save mpg's??? I mean maybe if you could sell your vehicle and not have to pay any more money to get that bike. Have fun riding that in the winter!
It's also the people who have a paid off gas truck that runs fine with zero problems and are "sick" of the mpg's and go buy a brand new $50K+ diesel truck to get better mpg's. Um weren't you paying $0/month for your gas truck? Even if you had cash on hand to buy the new one and werent going to finance. You would still be better off making the 0.5-1.5% that savings accounts offer. Now if you are made of money I doubt mpgs would be much of a concern. Gotta crunch those numbers!!
Gotta love the V10!
