Rough Running 05 F350 5.4

As the title said I have an 05 350 with the 5.4 and for the past couple weeks it has been starting rough or intermittent and sometimes when I accelerate it shudders, almost like it drops a cylinder or something. I was wondering if anyone had had any problems like this or if this is something that has happened and there was a recall. Thanks for any help that can be thrown my way!

75K miles and no codes truck is great other than this debacle. I had also read somewhere on a board about getting it reflashed, so I took it to the dealership and got them to do that, no better.

Sounds like one or more bad coils. Those are the symptoms, and because it doesn't do it all the time, you may not get a code unless there is a failure.

Not a recall, but there was an extended warranty issued on 2005's w/ the 5.4. It's on the injectors which can stick open or closed - that could be your problem, but as mentioned you really need to scan for codes first. I had one bad that was replaced under the extended warranty, I was getting a misfire code and lean code on the same bank. To know if that's it for sure though you need something than can read fuel trims.

With these trucks will the check engine light come on and stay on with a code? Or can it throw a code without the light being on? I had read somewhere about the extended warranty and everything i read makes it sound like thats what it is but I don't have the check engine light on. The dealership tried to tell me that the fuel pump was weak, which I have never heard of. Fuels pumps to my knowledge were either running or not. But could a low fuel pressure be because of an injector being bad. Thanks again for all this help. I would love to have this truck 100% because I do enjoy it.

It can have "pending codes" that won't trigger the light - you need a better scanner than the typical homeowner or autozone one to read them, but in general - yes, the light stays on until you clear it. Could depend on the code I guess and whether it's able to clear itself up, not 100% sure on that. I'm not a mechanic but when I was researching mine, the key to diagnosing injector problems is the fuel trims. I don't think injectors themselves could cause low pressure - not sure, but I think that's measured before the injectors anyway. Have you changed the fuel filter? That could cause low fuel pressure. Super easy to change on a 2005, none of the special tools needed. I'd try that before a pump.

I would guess coils, that was what was wrong with my truck with similar issues.

Get a dealer to perform a Power balance test. Also see this article.

MOTOR Magazine Article | MOTOR Information Systems

Its most likely the coils.

I just bought 10 new coils on ebay for this exact problem.

See this thread.
