Replacement clutch which one???

Here some choices. Please note, I am using the DMF that came out of a 88' and I need a new clutch. I am gonna go with LUK and These are three choices that popped up. All of them say I have to convert to a SMF. So can I use a clutch designed for a SMF on a DMF? Also, should I go for 11 inch or 12 inch? Any link to better clutches or better prices would be great!

If you are using a DMF you need to use a clutch kit for a DMF. The springs on a SMF clutch disc make it too thick to use with a DMF setup.
Rock Auto has some better prices, but I didn't see any Luk kits listed.
Clutch city has an OEM Valeo kit for $185 shipped

Ok, I'll checked there, are those brands reputable?

Yes Centerforce is quality and LUK would be what the factory would have used.
Check out carolinaclutch.com for prices on LUK.

I've had great luck with the Centerforce clutches, both in my trucks and ones I have installed for customers. One note though, don't be surprised when you hit the clutch pedal for the first time and think there is nothing there, they have a very soft pedal feel. The first one I installed was this way and I called their tech line, the tech asked me if I could slip the clutch at WOT in high gear. It wouldn't, so there was no problem.

Did you see my clutch city link? Valeo is the OEM manufacturer for Ford (at least the supplied the DMF's I'm pretty sure the rest of the clutch set would have been Valeo as well).

Carolina clutches looks to have this stock Luk kit :Ford Stock Replacement Clutch Kit: Clutch Kit &amp Stock Replacement Clutch Kit
I can't remember if I ordered through carolina clutch or clutch city when I did the clutch in my Ranger, but whichever one it was, I had no trouble with.

Sounds nice, could you feel when it was time to shift?

Yeah, I think you pulled a editing trick..

Thanks for the link, Is there any big advantage in getting a performance clutch as opposed to a OEM one???

Hey fellas, Guys on OB are saying I should replace the DMF. I'm not really dying to spend over 500 on this. I'm thinking I will use this clutch kit, and then use this flywheel.

I know LUK isn't a kevlar but I think I can live with it. Any thoughts?

Whats with some of the kits saying I need to upgrade slave, master, etc.?

Ok, what do you do with your truck? Is it mostly just a daily driver? Do you tow? Tow heavy? Race? Play around offroad?

The DMF was designed to work fine for the average user and protect the ZF5 transmission from low speed torque pulses. Is your DMF new or used and how many miles?

I'd go with the $130 ebay Luk kit you found. Unless you're screwing around with your truck and pushing tons of power, a regular clutch will be fine. The cheaper master cylinder will most likely be fine from oreilly's. Just make sure it is the right size for the slave, I think there were two different sizes over the years? I went with one from autozone soon after buying my truck and have had no issues with it in over 3 years.

I tow with it(17-18K gross). The guys on OB said to get rid of the DMF(88' w/ 160K). I am not pushing tons of power but I will have it intercooled w/more fuel soon so I want it to be strong. I'll see what I go for, I'm leaning toward the ebay LUK one. Post #11

i beleave the DMF os 6 one half a dozen the other. for every person you talk to that says keep the dmf, theres another that runs a solid flywheel. i know several people with the smf, i will likely convert mine to a smf when i do the clutch
