transmission question

Can an automatic 4x4 transmission that was mated to a 4.6 liter work behind a 5.4 liter.

It will fit and work, but the real question should be: For how long will it work? The 4.6 has a 4R70 trans and the 4 5.4 has the 4R100. The 4R70 might not be able to handle the torque output of the 5.4 engine for very long.

Thanks for the info moto mel. Can you tell me how I can tell the difference by looking. Is it stamped in the case or is there a tag on it?

There is usually a tag on the side of the transmission and yje numbers there will I.D. the vehicle that the trans originally came in. The 4R100 is a much larger transmission and has large reinforcing fins on the top of the case.
The P71 forum may have the trans I.D. information, I have had good results there.
Also, if there is no tag on the trans it may have been remanned by Ford. They remove that info during the reman process.
