272 Valve Adjustment Help

I am going to adjust the valves on my 1955 Y-Block (car). I recall that a few years ago there was some discussion that there was a better method than the manual shows. Does anybody have a favorite method? Should the valves be cold or warmed up? What gap is best? Thanks, Jag
