thanx steve,
i never go even 2000rpm i try to shift around 1500 to 1900 rpms and then at 55mph i have about 1400rpms just little over 1400 but not close to 1500. for my first tank i am at 210 miles and 5/8 of the tank is gone, hoping to get 125 for the rest 3/8 tank remaining,
what mpg do you all get from these 5.4 engines. i appreciate your time and replies.

I only get 13-14 mpg in my '00 Harley F150. But I have a heavy foot. I'm getting an edge programmer in hopes of a few more HP and mpgs. I work for a performance shop, and my manager drives a 04 heritage 5.4L crewcab. He installed an edge, and got more power on the dyno, mpgs on the highway and better shifting and throttle response. And he is turning 35" tires on 3:73 gears. He gets about 17-20 mpgs on the highway, but only 12-14 city with a cold air intake and magnaflow muffler. I have a KN in the stock box, and a catback 4" exhaust pipe and flowmaster. Im hoping for slightly better results cause I have a 2wd on smaller tires (275 45 20s) with 3:55 gears. We shall see.

when are you getting the programmer? and let me know of your results plz,
i am guessing i might be getting 14 to 15 mpg, but there is alot of lights here in my town of alaska , i only have 6 miles to my one job, 2.5 miles in town with 3 or 4 lights, and 3 miles of highway with 1 light, so my engine reach its temperature when i reach work or on the way back home and also its kinda stop and go.
so i guess 15 is good enough for me right?
another important question, my oil is 5w20, so should i use 0w20, mobil 1, for our alaskan winters as it goes -50 for couple weeks of january ?? usually it stays around 35below to 45below in december and till end of february and 25 below in march then starts getting better in april.
any replies are appreciated. thanx

Not sure when, if I buy a new one it will be a couple months. My manager is about to trade his truck in, and told me I could have his edge cheap. I'm in the middle of building an old 75 Ironhead Harley right now, so the truck has to wait.

The average mixed driving city and highway on my commute drive on the 02 was 14-15 mpg. I drive conservately. 280-300 miles per tank from nearly empty to fillups. If i get over 300 miles, I'm happy. Winter driving gives me around 270-275 miles per tank. Good question about which oil for your alaskan winter. I'm anxious for others to chime in with answer.
BTW, my 02 had 3.55 gear and use 285/70/17 Goodrich TA KOs.

hi everybody,
i got 306 miles of 22 gallons 75% town , and 25% highway
( its just 6 to 7 miles one way to my work so i am guessing the engine never gets to the temperature when it can perform 100% ??????),
i looked at my o2 sensors, looks like the owner never changed them , they look the same as the exhaust colour lol, so maybe he didnt do a tune up like spark plugs, o2 , fuel filter etc etc, so i got almost 14 miles per gallon,
so what can i do for tune up like spark plugs, o2s, fuel filter, (got a K&N filter),,,,,,????? what else???? every opinion is appreciated, i might get a couple mpg jump after spark plugs and o2 sensors??????

12-14 mpg in the city or winter. Maybe 17 on the highway if you behave. In your cold winters I would not be surprised if you do well to get 10-12 mpg.

Which truck did you choose?

One reason I got a 5.4 F-150 is because the torque is made much lower in the power band than other half tons. I hit my peak 330 Lb ft of torque at only 2500 rpm and at 4000 rpm the 5.4 is still putting down close to 300 ft lbs. (even though my 5.4 only has 235 hp)

HP is for bar room brags and High RPM rice burners, TORQUE is what makes these trucks awesome.

My F-150 pulls my 32 ft travel trailer up and over mountains 8% grades, etc. NO PROBLEM. Love my Fonefiddy

how was your day,,,, i chose the 2002 f150 xlt fx4 super cab with 5.4l, it has 107000 miles on it ( its charming and i love this style) , and the engine produces 260hp @ 4500rpm and 350tq @ 2500rpm, i am hoping to get a couple mpg more after a tune up.

At-a-boy, great choice. Hope it treats you as well as mine! You plan on doing any parts tuning or just the basic once over?

Hi every body and Merry Xmas,
i bought a 2002 f150 fx4 with 5.4 engine, right now i have 110000 miles on it, i bought it in august, i dont know if this noise was there when i bought it but now i am hearing this ticking noise from passenger wheel area,(cant hear anything when sitting inside the truck) ( can hear it when parked next to another car and open the window)
whats strange is that its not there in the morning cold start , its more like a hiss or air and not a constant sound but as it warms up for like 2 minutes there it becomes the tick or whatever you call it lol, then it stays like that,
i live in alaska and we get 50 below in january , right now we have like 15 below at night, is it because of our very low temperatures? if it is then it should go away after it warms up right?
i took it to a mechanic yesterday to check if exhaust gasket leaks or the studs r broken or whats wrong, he says exhaust everything is fine, it might be vvt noise or lifter or internal tap something,
when i first got it, i changed the oil, didnt change the filter cuz i was tired and it was kinda pita, i added lucas to the oil too, did it cause the debrees to go in and stuck under lifter or vvt or the small pores? now i have 5 w20 motorcraft oil with K7N oil filter installed in it, and i just ordered 2 Auto rx engine cleaner to clean it.
any ideas and suggestions are appreciated, and thanx for looking.
Thank you

a little note, have a little miss when warmed up good or after driving good 10 to 20 miles then the miss is at idle, just a slight miss , the mechanic said its running smooth like silk, but since its my truck and i drive it all the time so i know, lol

5w-20 might be too light of an oil. AFAIK, 5w-30 is recommended for '02 (as well as my '00). I'd switch to the proper oil, and see if the noise doesn't go away. You might actually benefit from the 0w-30, what with the cold mornings. Here in CO, when its down to ~-20, that first attempted startup is everything.

Thanx and yeah i was thinking of that too but it says 5w 20 on the Lid on top of engine where u put oil in, dont those engines have very tiny oil passages very small holes? What if the heavy oil clogs them

The "tick" your hearing might be a broken manifold stud. These trucks are famous for it.
