Ford to Recall 1,200,000 F150s, etc. over fuel tank strap failures
#16
Crawled underneath my 2001 F150
to check it out for myself on a hot & humid afternoon. The rear tank strap was badly corroded and felt much thinner in the corroded area than up near its top ends where it attaches to the frame. I added a length of galvanized pipe wrap over that part to reinforce it a bit. I used up all the pipe wrap I had & didn't want to take my truck off its jack stands to go buy more. So I used a 3' length of truckers' bungee cord to reinforce the front strap, which looked & felt much better. That will have to do until Ford is ready to finish the job. Time for me to take a long road trip.

Video of corroded gas tank straps
I put this on Youtube. It is fairly easy to crawl under the left side of the pickup bed to see and feel about 3/4 of the strapping.

Bah, I place this in the lap of owners of older vehicles just not paying attention to their trucks. I replaced mine two years ago because they needed it... I don't think this was recall worthy. If this was worth a recall for safety, Ford and Chevy should recall all of the vehicles that have been blowing-out rusted-out brake lines as well.

Thanks for mentioning the Ford website to check VIN against their recall. I did not know about it. Go here: Recall Notices| Ford, Lincoln & Mercury Owners | FLMowner.com
Well I went to the web site...plugged in my VIN#...set up a appointment to get my tank straps "inspected" at a local dealership. That inspection happened Friday (8-20-11).
FYI; Mine does have a skid plate {fx4 package}....but the website doesn't make that distinction, plus, it kicked my VIN # up as one on the recall. So that leads me to believe that trucks with skid plates are indeed part of the recall.
I had this nice letter placed on the seat when they return my truck from the inspection...from Ford Motor Co.
retyped in its entirety.
" Ford Motor Company is voluntarily recalling certain 1997-2003 model year F-150, 2004 F-150 Heritage, 1997-1999 model year F-250 light Duty, and 2002-2003 model year Blackwood vehicles. Your vehicle has passed the fuel tank strap inspection.
Parts for the permanent repair are not currently available. We apologize for any inconvenience this parts shortage may have caused you. We are closely working with our suppliers to accelerate part availability. You will be notified by Ford Motor Company via mail as soon as parts are available to complete this repair on your vehicle. when notified, you will need to contact your dealer and schedule a service appointment to have the final repair performed on your vehicle as soon as possible.
Again, we apologize for inconvenience this situation causes and assure you that we are doing everything possible to expedite resolution.
Sincerely,
Ford Motor Company

This tells me that I just got the inspection done by a certified dealership & will get new straps as soon as they become available.
There was also some reporting a cable type strap being installed instead of the strap. that may depend on how severe the straps are rusted and whether or not there is a skid plate installed or not??
Now...I did not get any extra back up cable installed, but that maybe due to that I already have a tank skid plate. Those of you whom do not have a skid plate may very well get these aforementioned temporary cables. IDK?
Hope this helps shed some light on the issue

this recall stemmed from the Insurance instatue for Hiway Safety..er National hiway and safety Instatue...or something like that...they are one who leveraged the recall. you might want to contact them and see if they would broaden the recall for the rangers too.

gas tanks on fx-4 trucks will not fall out because of the skid plates under them.
Detroit News 8/1/2011
Ford Motor Co. said today that it is recalling 1.22 million pickups in the United States and Canada over concerns about fuel tanks dropping after failure of their supporting straps and causing fire.
The recall includes the 1997-2003 Ford F-150, 2004 F-150 Heritage, 1997-99 F-250 — versions below 8,500 pounds — and 2002-03 Lincoln Blackwood pickups.
NHTSA said in May it had 243 reports involving the fuel tank dropping below the vehicle and/or dragging on the ground, 95 involved fuel leakage, and nine included reports of sparks from the tank being dragged on the road.
NHTSA had one report of strap failure in which the leaking fuel ignited but self-extinguished. Ford reported another incident in which the leaking fuel ignited and the resultant fire destroyed the vehicle.
Ford will notify owners in mid-September and ask them to take their vehicles to their local dealers who will repair the vehicles. Ford is aware of three vehicle fires and one injury associated with this condition.

I was told by my dealer that this recall will be in high corrosion states only. That is where they use salt on the roads. Which is BULL as corrosion can happen anywhere. I was also told that if my vehicle was involved I would get a letter from Ford as they no use DMV (Dept. of Motor Vehicles) records to find owners even if they are not the original owner.
