Transfer case black goo

So I took the transfer case out of my 91 because it would only drive in 4hi, as I was power washing the case before teardown, Black goo oozed out of the top vent tube. I understand this case should be filled with tranny fluid. Should I bother doing a teardown or just jump to rebuilt. This goo has me worried the internals might be pretty shot. FYI I just got this vehicle at a police auction so I have no idea what kind of maintenance it had.The tranny had nice pink fluid and the truck only shows 92K on the ODO

it could be burnt up fluid. its always worth a shot to tear somethin down if your alternative is a rebuild anyway. if you have the tools to rebuild it, the bearings are just probably shot.

OR

lucky for anyone who owns these trucks. . . .theyre junkyard specials. if you have any "u pick it, u pull it" junkyards around, you can more htan likely go take your pick of a few. around my way theyre about 65 bucks to pick yer own.

at the local pick-n-pull, a good np208 is $140. im sure all transfer cases around there would be around that price. i know once i drop my transfer case in my k10, its going to be completely horrible. i know the bearings are shot, but she still drives. if i hit the brakes hard, it stops driving though. hahah. then i gotta go through the gears on the transfer case, and then itll drive again.

There are no friction clutch packs inside a transfer case only hard locking clutches. I can't see what would cause the oil to turn black. If a bearing is shot you would hear it and probly feel it driving.

Did you check the oil before dropping it? Most likely someone used the wrong fluid in it. If water got in, the oil would look like a strawberry shake or rusty colored.

Also is this a electronic shift or a manual shift?

WOW I wish the prices here were that low On Long Island they think they are selling gold. The "AUTO RECYCLER" AKA Junkyard wants 500 bucks for my BW1356 but he swears its only got 6K on it.Wish we had a pick and pull but the PRIMADONNAS here make that impossible , they would probably sue if they dirtied there Gucci loafers walk through the place. I found some online rebuilders who will ship one to me for less.
MY case is a manual and I will be splitting it today ( I didn't have a big enough snap ring plier) but I got that yesterday and ran out of time. The goo looked like motor oil sludge and didn't have any tranny burn smell. My first thought was incorrect fluid. I will post pics of the carnage. Thanks for the replies.

OK splitting the case was easy and I have to say this thing looked great inside the range fork was shot and the range hub has material built up on it from the fork. Can I clean up the hub (it's steel and looks great other than the aluminum build up) or do I need to spend 90 bucks and replace it. I would post pics but can't figure out how (nuts huh, can tear a part a case but can't post a pic) Too old!! thanks,
Fred

Cant hurt to try. Id try cleaning it up first, and see where that gets ya. I rebuilt the case in my 89, theyre actually pretty simple to disassembly/reassemble
