460 lack of power while hauling
I picked up an 96 f350 dually crew cab with a 460 a/t about 6 months ago. The truck has plenty of power on its own, but when I hooked up my horse trailer, and my boat, both times it seem to not have alot of power. it was hard keeping the truck up to 70mph. Now I'm worried. I about to head to gatlinburg haulin my GTO and I dont think i can make the hills. last year i hauled with my 04 f250 5.4 and it pulled fine but i gave that truck to my wife. I have just did a tune up. MSD cap, rotor, coil, and motorcraft plugs, also cut of the cat and ran a staight pipe. never hauled before i done the changes. The truck has 157000 miles, and I only drive it about 300-350 miles amonth. Sorry for rambling on but I'm just worried, or am I just over thinking it. Any help PLEASE?

i guess the biggest question is: how much do your toys weigh? the 460 is no slouch, but its certainly not a towing monster either (in stock form) . my 5.0 barely keeps the truck moving at 70, and cant do it up hills. i couldnt tow anything. the 460 is better, but its not a miracle worker.
to me it sounds normal. some long tubes and some other mild mods would wake it up quite a bit for some hill pullin power. the way ford was forced to make the 460 perform from the factory (power robbing emission standards) is like forcing a highly trained elite soldier into a meek and dismal life of nothin but squirt gun fights with little girls.

I have replaced the stock filter with an k&n. the fuel filters are next on my list. I'm replacing the pumps also do to the front tank sending unit is messed up. since I'm already in there i'll replace it. My 04 f250 5.4 pulled the GTO to gatlinburg and back doing 80 and 90 no problem, except on 1 steep hill i went from 90 to 60, no big deal. But this truck doesnt pull like the 250.

I'm use to haulin with the 250 i expected the same response are better, but the weight and gearing is probly the differnce. I was told that these trucks will pull down a house, just not fast at it

the modular motor has more hp stock for stock, but its a turd. check what was suggested above (gear ratio), but if it were my truck i'd do some small things to make it the powerhouse that it should be (relatively speaking). you might also have converter issues or some other junky lame issue associated with auto transmissions.

I have already removed the cat. I'm about to order some hedman headers, throttle body spacer, ram air kit, and a programmer. I'm hoping to will add some more pep, maybe alittle more mpg. The truck was rough when i picked it up. so I'm slowly building it up but for 2500 i didnt lose out. 96 f350 crew cab long bed dually xlt, all power, 460, and 157000 miles on it

before ya install all those parts, it would behoove you to do a compression test. it would really suck to spend a weekend or two in/under the truck installing all those parts, and do it all over again for one reason or another. (been there done that so many times).
if it needs a rebuild, theyre not that much for these ole motors, and you'd be installing everything once in a clean engine bay/motor

just to give ya an idea of price. . .as long as your cylinder walls are not scored (not needing to be bored), you can do one of these budget rebuilds. copper head gaskets will be outrageously priced, and the ones in the kit will be more than sufficient for what youll be doing with it. copper exhaust gaskets would be a good idea and wouldnt be the end of the world if you bought them aside from a master kit

You seem to know a good bit about the 460. Im having the same problem with my truck. But Im a newb at all the terminology used in the forums here.(I just found it today) Do you think you could give me some specific pointers on what to do to make this thing pull better?
