TRANSMISSION OVERDRIVE PROBLEMS

This last weekend my friends and i went to the sand dunes with our trucks and the hole time that i was there i had my truck in 4low and it never went above second gear. after we left the dunes, my truck would not shift into overdrive. does anyone have any suggestions other than to stay away from the sand?
