too late lol? then you need to fix your mistake before proceeding:
if you followed the article above,and you know the valve timing has never been messed with,then you won't need this link.skip.
HOWEVER! do you KNOW the previous owner didn't incorrectly remove,and install an IP before you bought it? you may want to make sure she's not a tooth or two off for good measure.this particular timing must NEVER be altered.period.read below:

that is very important to make sure of, on an unknown idi engine,because if she's just a tooth or two off,she'll still run but power will suffer greatly and nothing you could do would restore her besides making sure everything is lined up properly.
many,many people have incorrectly removed ip's on these engines.never assume it hasn't been done at one time on your used truck.



how to adjust the fuel settings with pics:
remember these steps first:
a)pyrometer gauge.
b)more air in and out of engine.
d)more air in and out of engine.
e)more air in and out of engine.
f)more air in and out of engine.
what happened to c)? oh yeah: more air in and out of engine.
g)then you can add more fuel lastly.
she can only burn so much oil at a time.add too much,and you'll roll coal and have a mushy pedal,that i kid you not,will gain power when you let up slightly off the skinny.i had a rebuilt ip do this.i gained power on my n/a by turning the fuel down to clear the smoke.try it.you'll see.you'll be backing her down to make her feel nice and crisp and responsive if you over fuel too.
proceed with caution! too much fuel could cost you an engine!
remember,when it comes to diesels,unlike gas engines,you cannot harm them by under fueling.a diesel set up running lean is a diesel simply lacking power.easily corrected by turning the fuel up after some test runs.over fueling however leads to melting pistons!
(use extreme caution if you think rolling coal is cool! fair warning!)

As with any IP adjustment, you should have a pyrometer installed before you adjust the fuel, high EGT's can damage the pistons.

Also the torque screw is set at about a 45 degree angle in relation to the IP drive shaft on the rear of the IP.

There is another screw that may have a cap on it, or a seal wire that is parallel with the IP drive shaft.
That screw holds internal IP parts in place and should not be adjusted.
IP damage would be the result.

E40D OWNERS IMPORTANT!
E40D owners (if you have the auto trans with an overdrive gear behind your diesel,you have this Electronic 4 speed OD trans) read and apply this before adjusting your timing.
because if you adjust the timing by ear/feel,this will greatly help you,or leave you helplessly lost!plus the new found power with a failing or incorrectly set TPS,could be the death of your trans!!do NOT skip!!!
besides that,the performance increase,depending on the state of your TPS,could surprise you by making your truck feel greatly more powerful.

adjustable,ignition/dynamic timing:
the IDI is a mechanical engine.there is no computer to adjust the timing for when the fuel ignites.you, or a diesel mechanic must set this periodically. whenever the ip and or injectors are changed,and once every 30ish thousand miles max is a good idea.as the ip and injectors ware,the timing slightly retards,reducing performance and economy over time.
its not really ignition timing per say of course,as you can't move a distributor to change when a spark occurs.what your doing is adjusting when fuel from the ip enters.
tip;
another issue,though a bit more rare,is that sometimes you may find a used truck where a previous owner had to change a hard ip/fuel injection line.if they used one from a 6.9l on a 7.3l or visa versa then that cylinder will never fire correctly.
they are slightly different length lines.so make 100% sure you either running a full 6.9 or a full 7.3l set.otherwise you'll never have the full potential from your engine.this is not all that uncommon since a lot of idi trucks and owners simply needed to get the truck running.

trying to match the timing lines between your old ip and the new ip will not work.if it does get you close,then it was just by chance.
how to set the timing of the pump somewhere in the ballpark without a meter (not recommended.caution is strongly advised.) to play it safe,simply line up the two marks and take the truck to a diesel mechanic with the required meter.these are getting hard to find these days.most modern diesel tech's will look at you funny when asked.so be prepared to make lots of phone calls.alternatively search the idi section for timing meters and alternative solutions such as the ferret adapter with timing light w/ advance to find more info,so you can properly time your engine yourself.
read and follow how to time your engine by the sound of it's "rattle" and test drives.
WARNING! serious,perhaps full engine failure CAN result! (don't let me scare ya too bad. it's not so scary lol.) so caution is strongly advised!!!!

Good post!! I got my old IP and lines out today, my new IP and injectors will be here tuesday or wednesday, hopefully I'll get lucky and they'll get here tomorrow! FORDF250 has been a huge help to me so far and I'm sure I'll be bugging him some more!

That is a really nice write up on replacement stuff i must say. I also cant believe there were so many variations in the same two engines. Nice work posting all that, always good to have more info!!

They are tuned lower so it doesnt deliver so much fuel in areas where the air is thin, mine is rated at 170hp, the option on the valve cover for the high atitude is 158. I'm not sure if the high alt pumps can be tuned to reg specs.

Iirc i asked dave about this and he was saying that theyre the same, only the max fuel screw and the timing were backed off on the HA models. From what i understand, the only different pumps were on the 93+ turbo vehicles with the torque screw. But with all the differences on the list, its really hard to say what ford did.

I got one of those later uhaul pumps with the torque screw for truck in my sig because I figured why not have it in case down the line?

My truck as is with their new injectors smokes black when empty from 1/2 throttle to full throttle. Then we loaded the trailer and it got a bit worse when on it. Then it even got worse going up a hill when things started to heat up.

I messed with that torque screw because I had seen that video and a mention of the turbo pumps being turned out and even with na? My pump had a loose set screw when I got it, but I turned it so it was about even and it seemed to take power away from the truck at the lower half of th pedal, but not really effect the smoke. It really wasn't anything to mention in the same throttle range, it was the upper half that has me really worried.

I was thinking of putting that torque screw right back where it was because it didn't effect our pinned throttle smoking issue.

I am forced to try and turn that main fuel screw down I guess?


And I have a cowl intake but I think I am also forced to change the original exhaust to try and help the poor truck.

yes,for sure you want to leave the torque screw alone.that's really for turbo applications,and shouldn't be played with at all without a pryo,at least until you turn the main fuel supply down.
they put them on the N/A pumps for some reason,so i suppose it could help,but you should be careful with it.
sounds like you might want to try 2 flats down on the main fuel.
i have the 7.3l with a large custom free flowing exhaust,and cowl induction with K&N filter.i still needed one flat down on the U-Haul pump,so be careful.
remember too lean and you just lose power,too rich you could lose an engine.with no pyro,you can guess which way i "lean" towards.
besides,all i lost was smoke and a mushy peddle at the bottom,no power lose at all,cus i didn't haven the air to go along with that extra fuel,so it was just going out the pipe unburt is all.smoke doesn't equal power.start turning it down.you'll see exactly the same thing.you'll also notice lower engine coolant temps.
as the ip's ware over the years,they need to be turned up because they don't put out the fuel they used too.this is why you hear good results from members who claim to gain power when they turned up their pumps.results will vary with every truck because of so many variables.the amount of flats don't mean anything compared to others.so you must fine tune your ip to your truck.

I will definately try and tune my pump better but in case I wasn't clear on my pump, if I am reading the info and video correctly, that torque screw was turned out. So after finding this info about the threads being even with the jam nut for na motors, that is why I turned it in and what resulted was what I call lack of power on the bottom end compared to even my old pump/injectors.
