Electric fan selection for 55 F100

Looking for ideas on a wrecker electric fan for my 55F100. Thought of using the Chrysler Concord dual fan, so one could manually run a fan if needed. Here is the clearance I have between the 302 and new stock rad. about 4.5 "

Well as for wrecker choices, I have been using a fan from a 93 3.8L Taurus, lots of air flow, built in fan shroud, easy to mount, plus it is a two speed fan. My 2 cents.

Sparky, would you have any pics of the set up? Are all the temperature senors from the Taurus too?

I can't seem to be able to link it now, but there is a great article on three fans that are good for our trucks.

It is on "460Ford.com" site. search BBR cooling issues.

I had decided if I was going to use a electric fan, that based on this info, the one i would choose would be the cooling fan for a Chevy HHR. it moves about 4000 cfm. and you can buy it new from chevy parts dealer for $75.00. It is only 4'' deep and fits a 22 inch radiator very well.

I didn't go further because I decided to keep my mechanical fan.

The other two discussed were the Lincoln MKVIII and ford taurus

No I do not have any pics as I am really bad at documenting things on film, if anyone remembers what film is ..... the temp sensor I used is from a Fiero, it activates a relay that turns the fan on.... I also installed an override switch so I can manually turn the fan on.... which I do most days now.

*****, I tried the Taurus fan on my F1, but the motor was too long and interfered with the water pump. I had to go with a spal 16" that I bought from speedway. Mounted directly behind the radiator without a shroud, it cools just fine.

Ok I borrowed one of those "new-fangled" digital cameras and took some pics of the fan, they are very ugly and make the truck engine bay look very dirty and rusty, so I only put up two of them ...... it is not really that bad looking but I guess I could clean it... but then again it is driving season not cleaning season here
I put them in my album... under my public profile

Sparky, thanks for the pics.
It doesn't look like the original rad for the F100 though??
How much space is required between the rad and the water pump pulley to use the Taurus fan set up?

Does it HAVE to be a wrecker fan?
Here's a pic of a truck in our club, the guy who built the truck had a number of radiator shrouds built to his spec out of stainless steel. The shroud in the pic is one of these and is made to bolt up to a stock radiator (the radiator in this pic is not stock but the dimensions are OEM). I have one of these shrouds and a 16 inch electric fan that fits it. I can take some measurements if you like.

Actually it is a rad for a 66 V8 Mustang........ I know I had one in the shop so I used it to fab stuff up... then I ordered a new rad....... The fan shroud it self is not that thick..... 3" at the widest point and I have 1.5" between the shroud and the water pump pulley.
I would have used a mechanical fan but my engine sits so low that only half of the rad would be covered by the fan arc... so I went electric

You could use a Taurus fan out of a Volvo. It is the famously powerful two speed Taurus fan motor, but Ford redesigned it to unbolt out of the shroud easy peezy. It also comes with trick automatic low/high relay pack.

The advantage of using an oem fan is that they are built to a much higher standard than the aftermarket fans.
