2004 Blower motor RESISTOR or RELAY????

Wink 2004 Blower motor RESISTOR or RELAY????

The fan only would work on 2nd and 4th speeds and we were advised by someone on this forum to replace the switch itself.
That didn't change anything. so we were advised to replace the RELAY but never got to it (or even located where it is) and NOW the fan only works on the 4th speed.
We are seeing that most feel that it is caused by the RESISTOR and/or the bad contacts on the wireing pigtail.
If I am understanding this right IF the RELAY was bad then the fan WOULD NOT work at all, and by the fact that IT DOES work but just not on all the speeds it seems to be in the RESISTOR itself?? Am I right? Where is the relay located on an '04 Ranger so we can check that first just for giggles since we have already bought it?? Thanks!!

resistor.

On my 1999 Ranger it's in the engine compartment attached to the air plenum.

If you can find the blower motor, follow the two wires back to a plug with 4 wires. The plug is connected, most times, to the resistor pack.

As has been said, the blower motor speed resistor pack is located under hood, passenger side, near the firewall, out of sight inside the air plenum, so that it stays cool. Remove it's electrical connector & a couple of fastners to pull the resistor pack out.
It & corrosion of it's electrical connections, have earned their place at the top of your suspect list on blower motor speed problems.

Look in your 04's owners manual for the relay location you spoke of.

We've replaced the resistor and now the fan works on all speeds.
HOWEVER, the wireing connector plug and the old resistor was terribly corroded and rusted.
We temporarely hooked up the resistor by putting single connectors on each wire because we couldn't find a repair harness on Sunday anywhere.
We've got one ordered and will install it and we should be good to go from there.
(My great Niece HAD to have a/c for Monday as she was having her Senior (High School) pictures done and couldn't be ruffled on the way with no a/c)

OK good find, fix, feedback & to hear all are cool with the McGiver fix, can't afford have a meltdown in those circumstances, so "any port in a storm"....Right!!!!! lol

Yep, You got that right!!

We had a heck of a time finding a new (repair) harness.....finally found it at JEGGS of all places......$16.98 on our doorstep. BTW: part number is 85178 which I believe is a Dorman number.

Newbie here shouting for help.
I've a 1991 Ford Ranger XLT cab.
Replacing my blower mower resistor.
Body is shot and so is the wiring harness.
Went and bought a new resistor and harness.
I'm stumped.
Wiring scheme on the old and new are very different.

To set the scene.
I will describe the resistor and harness vertically as top,middle and bottom left and bottom right.

On the dead old resistor::
Top is yellow wire with red stripe
Middle is red wire
Bottom left is orange wire with black stripe
Bottom right is green wire with yellow stripe.

On the new harness::
Top is green wire
Middle is Orange wire with black stripe
Bottom left is black wire
Bottom right is yellow wire.

My question is do I ignore the wiring scheme and rewire it as I originally found it on the origina harness? Or do I follow the new wiring scheme and ignore the original setup?

I'd be forever grateful for some handholding here.

Follow the scheme on the original. Just cross reference off the old connector. Do a search on here for blower resistor bank/pack, and you'll find some threads on this. I believe on of them is even my own, at least a reply is. This is a very common thing on our Rangers. I ordered a new connecter online through Amazon, my colour code was identical to the original, IIRC.

The color of the insulation may vary, but the nichrome wires that provide resistance should be the same. Look at the 'busy' side of the resistor pack, compare it to the original. Connect the wires regardless of color such that the resistors are in the same 'electrical' position as the original and it should work fine.

I intuitively thought I should follow the original scheme.
I'm glad I asked as I didn't want to fry something or have the heater operate haywire (pun?).

Sorry to dig this one back up but I seem to be having a similar issue with a '04 Ranger. I've replaced the resistor, de-pinned and cleaned the wiring harness (from blower motor to resistor), checked all fuses/relays and still I've got nothing. I used jumper wires to verify that the fan worked so now all that's left is the switch panel itself, right? Fan doesn't switch on in any speed or combination of door settings. Doors are operable, I can hear them cycling when the switch is moved.

I've had this issue on an older Ranger and a P71, resistor alone seemed to fix it. No dice on this one.

Sorry nothing - we are all here for one another...

It sounds as if you have gone as far as you possibly could to rule out any other problems with your heater/switch.

The only remaining option is probably the switch. Sounds as if the whole dashboard has to be removed to get to the heater control console? Yikes...

We'd love to know how it turns out...
