oldmerc, many people have thoughts about this... If you don't want to use the stock location, you can use many OEM type from other vehicle. from mustang ti Blazer tanks... what size of tank do you want? where are you thinking about

My thoughts are Ford put it in a good place and there's no reason to move it anywhere else...

In ways I agree. unless you have a reason that you want to move it... If your happy with it behind the seat, and don't want to add something else there then it's fine. If you want more weight in the back of your truck moving the gas tank back helps with traction...

I agree with what your saying, but on the other hand, Ford did change out the location from behind the seat to lower in the frame. I just don't remember what year and why though. I used to smoke when I was a kid and the thought always crossed my mind when I was driving my old truck. "What If". It's not my present 49 and I don't smoke any more

The 1970 Mustang tank is 22 gallons & fits nicely between the
back rails. The positives are you get that old stinky tank out of the
cab & you free up the space behind the seat for storage or more legroom.
The negatives are the fill spout will be in the middle of your bed & you lose the space for your spare tire under the bed. Good luck - It's a very good
first project for your truck.

Back behind the seat in 56. Not sure but didn't they stay behind the seat for a number of years after 56?

They stayed behind the seat until the late seventies. Mine is still in the cab because I think it's well protected in an accident, and I run a spare tire under the back of the bed.

I just purchased a 69 mustang tank, found one for $75 shipped on craiglist. Its the 16 Gal tank. Plan on using the "INSTALLING A MID-60's Mustang Tank in a '53 F-100" artice for the installation. Thanks for the great info!
