two types of factory air?

My 78 has what looks to be added on air, with the 2 ***** under the dual vents in middle of dash. but the panel the ***** are on have a ford emblem. I have seen this a couple times. no box under hood. is this factory? which is better, original stlye with the box and levers on heater panel or the two **** setup? Asking because i have another 78 parts truck with the original stlyle A/C. Thanks.

The one you have is dealer installed. The one with the box under the hood is factory installed.
As far as which is better, it's more personal prefference than anything else. Some say factory cools better than add on. Others preffer the add on because there's no big box under the hood. Makes engine work easier.

What he said. An add on unit that is working well will run you out of the truck looking for a jacket, believe me.

A lot of parts are still available for the factory air but like anything else that was built 30+ years ago some of them are getting harder to find. Same with the dealer add on air.
