Intake upgrade ??? exhaust upgrade??

What's a good carb intake for my hauling truck? 86 f-250 with a 351w. Looking to get a cheap set of iron gt40 heads and have an edelbrock 1406 carb already. I'm not looking for something extravagant just looking for more performance. Are there any direct fit headers for our trucks? Or do we need custom after the headers? Thanks

JEG's sells several headers for our trucks, and I believe 80s Mustang shorty headers will fit too (maybe even to the factory Y-pipe, though I'm not certain). LMC sells exhaust kits for our trucks as well, but I'm not sure if you'd save money going that route or just taking your truck to a shop and having them do something custom.

As far as the intake, I'm not sure, I'll have to pass that question off to someone else...lol

There are no headers I know of to fit our trucks where the exhaust pipes will not need to be modified. That's the real problem with headers on these trucks. They bring the exhaust down way low, and sometimes in the way of the tranny pan and crossmember. You then have to decide how to route it after that, and you will have to do it yourself or take it to a shop.

You will want a very conservative intake design. The bottom of the line performer or another low-rise small runner diameter intake. That will give you good low end which is what a truck needs that is used as a truck.

Dave's right - as always. I recommend the Edelbrock Performer, which is designed for low RPM. Not the Performer RPM, which is designed for a bit higher RPM - which is a shame since a guy keeps adverting one on craigslist here for not much money. And, I've read that the Weiand Stealth is good for low end torque as well.

On the other hand, the Ford cast iron 4v intake is supposed to be a decent manifold. Not as good as those above but should be less expensive if you can find one in the jy.

Franklin is giving you good advice. Resist the urge to get a high RPM intake; it will only hurt your low end torque, which is what a REAL truck needs.

Weiand also makes a low rise, dual plane intake called the "Street Warrior," which is a direct competitor to the Edelbrock Performer.

Dynomax and hooker make a bolt on exhaust for our trucks that 2 1/4 duals that route under the pan then down the passenger side and both exit behind the passenger side rear tire for a factory look. I purchased one a few years back and was please with the quality for the price.
